About Mike Hellawell
Former professional footballer Michael Stephen Hellawell (born June 30, 1938) played twice for England and made 322 Football League games.
Career and life
Hellawell was born in Keighley, in Yorkshire’s West Riding. He attended St Bede’s Grammar School in Bradford along with his brother John, who was a professional football player as well.
Hellawell joined Queens Park Rangers in August 1955 from Salts, a local non-league team in Saltaire, and made his debut on February 25, 1956, in a home game against Exeter City.
He was chosen to compete for the Third Division South representative team in an April 1957 matchup against the Northern Section.
He participated in 45 Football League contests while a member of Rangers before being moved to Birmingham City in 1957.
Also, he participated in the 1961 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup Final while playing for Birmingham won the League Cup in 1963, and earned his two full England caps in 1962 against France and Northern Ireland.
Following his eight years at Birmingham, he played non-league football for Bromsgrove Rovers, league football for Sunderland, Huddersfield Town, and Peterborough United.
Hellawell, who played in one first-class game for Warwickshire, also demonstrated potential as an all-around cricket player.
