A Georgia firefighter died after having a medical episode during a training exercise last Thursday, according to Bartow County Fire and Emergency Services.
The department said that it is with heavy hearts that it shares the news of the passing of one of its own. The department requested that people ” keep the Smith family and our department in their prayers during this trying time.”
The statement from BCFES reads,
It is with heavy hearts that we inform you of the death of one of our own, Firefighter Matthew Smith.
Matt passed away yesterday afternoon around 1700 hours, from complications of an apparent medical incident that he suffered during a training exercise last Thursday.
We will pass along arrangements as they become available. Please keep the Smith family and our department in your prayers during this difficult time.
His family members and friends were deeply saddened by the sudden death of firefighter Matthew Brian Smith.
What happened to Matthew Smith?
Matthew Brian Smith, a firefighter with Bartow County Fire & Emergency Services (BCFES), lost consciousness on March 16, 2023, while participating in a search and rescue training drill at the Bartow-Cartersville Fire Joint Training Center.
Firefighter Smith was participating in an exercise when the instructors realized that he was having a serious medical emergency, and they immediately took him out of the search maze to start CPR.
BCFES staff members started advanced cardiac life support procedures and CPR right away. The decision was made to use the BCFES’s on-site ALS ambulance, which was on standby for training, to transfer Firefighter Smith to Piedmont Cartersville Medical Center.
Firefighter Smith was revived by emergency response personnel as well as emergency room staff. He did recover cardiac action, and he remained on life support for six days.
Smith regrettably passed away on March 21, 2023 after six days of treatment.

The 41-year-old was a successful business owner who had always wanted to be a firefighter. He therefore pursued his goals with the same vigour with which he led his life. Those goals came true two years ago, when he was hired by the Bartow County Fire Department.
He was survived by 13 year old son, Noah, and a 22 year old John. Condolences flooded social media after the demise news of Matthew Smith broke out.
