The tragic death of Lucy Fernandez

A memorial mass was held on Tuesday in memory of a student from South Florida who passed away in a boating accident on Sunday close to Boca Chita Key.

Before 7 o’clock in the evening, the boat’s operator hit a channel marker, causing it to capsize.

“Police arrived first and removed some critically injured people from the river. They were brought to Elliot Key Island, where critical patients were transferred by air ambulance “says Captain Juan Garrandes of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

Four of the eleven injured passengers who were evacuated to a hospital from the boat’s 14 occupants.

 

Who is Lucy Fernandez?

Lucy Fernandez, a 17-year-old student at Our Lady of Lourdes Academy, died as a result of her injuries. Those who knew her described her as an honour student who had a strong religious conviction. She will be sorely missed.

What happened?

Following a boat’s collision with a channel marker close to Boca Chita Key, which resulted in its capsize, one person is dead and three others are in severe condition.

According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, the incident that occurred just before 7 p.m. Sunday injured 11 out of the 14 individuals on the boat.

What did the police say?

In addition to Miami-Dade Police marine patrol units, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the agency dispatched more than 10 units to the area.

“When we got there, we teamed up with the police and helped the other persons who were in the water near the boats. They were brought to the island, evaluated, and some of them were taken to the hospital, according to Garrandes.

What do the officials say?

The remaining seven boat passengers, according to officials, only sustained minor wounds. The seriously injured were flown to medical facilities in Miami. The Miami Archdiocese has issued the following statement:

“The boating incident yesterday involving Our Lady of Lourdes students and others is tragic.

Please continue to pray for each afflicted family in the upcoming days, and may they all feel God’s presence, especially as they travel.

According to CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald, kids from Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart and Katerina “Katy” Puig, the Miami Herald Girls Soccer 7A-5A Player of the Year and Coco Aguilar, both of whom are in critical condition, were the other girls transported.

The Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart hosted Tuesday’s vigil mass.

Her classmates and friends gathered on Monday for a rosary prayer.

“She was just like the sun itself. Because yellow was her favourite colour, I am wearing it today. She, in my opinion, embodies all that yellow stands for: pure joy, a burst of sunshine, “added Fernandez’s buddy.
