Who was Laura Zito?

Laura Zitowas the wife of guitarist and Gulf Coast Records founder Mike Zito. Born and raised in Nederland, Laura is a devoted Bulldog who later attended Lamar University to earn a teaching degree.

Before retiring with a disability after learning she had cancer, Laura taught for 16 years at Odom Academy in Beaumont and for an additional 8 years in the seventh grade at C.O. Wilson Middle School in Nederland.

Mike Zito is a St. Louis, Missouri-born American guitarist, vocalist, record producer, and songwriter. Along with Cyril Neville, Devon Allman, Charlie Wooton, and Yonrico Scott, he co-founded the Royal Southern Brotherhood.

At the age of five, Zito began singing, and by his late teens, he had launched a career in the St. Louis region music scene. On the Eclecto Groove label, Zito made his international debut in 2008. Before joining Eclecto Groove Records in 2008, Zito created music on his label and went on local and even some national tours. Eclecto Groove released Pearl River, his second CD, in 2009. The title track was a collaboration between Zito and Cyril Neville.

With the release of Greyhound in 2011, Zito completed his recording deal with Delta Groove/Eclecto Groove. At the 2011 Blues Music Awards in Memphis, Tennessee, Greyhound was a finalist for “Best Rock Blues Album”. Mike Zito joined Ruf Records in 2013 and released Gone to Texas, a profound and intimate CD that is devoted to the place that, in his words, changed his life.

Following the cancellation of his European tour in 2020, Zito took a flight to Texas to begin work on his “free-to-download” album, Quarantine Blues. With musicians from several cities, it was written, recorded, and mixed in just 14 days. Guitarist Tracii Guns, a founding member of L.A. Guns, made a prominent appearance while working from a Danish quarantine.

In Nederland, Texas, Laura Lena Duke Zito passed away peacefully shortly after 1 pm. She was surrounded by all of her family members and all of the affection in the world.

Mike Zito wrote,

“Our sweet girl, Laura Lena Duke Zito, has taken her last breath and smiled as she passed peacefully today a little after 1pm in Nederland, Tx. She was surrounded by all of her family and all of the love in the world. She is no longer in pain or suffering. I held her hand and told her I loved her as Sophie and Josie were by her side. She smiled and closed her eyes.

The world will not be the same without her and certainly, our world will forever be changed.

She was a teacher through and through and taught us to love and live life to the fullest until her final hour.

We will keep you all posted on her services as they come together this week.

Please, everyone needs some space right now to process.”

Mike was greatly inspired by Laura since she had such a beautiful soul and was such a nice person.

In July 2022, Laura received a stage 4 metastatic pancreatic cancer diagnosis, and at that time, her prognosis was for nine to twelve months. She received few successfull chemotherapy treatments at MD Anderson. Doctors advised hospice care earlier this year. At that time, Laura and her husband Michael decided to give their family a unique summer.

Anyone who knows Laura also knows that she is a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan, and Dak Prescott, the team’s quarterback, recently gave her a shout-out.

Dak refers to himself as Laura’s supporter and wished her luck while emphasizing that “faith is everything.”
