What happened to the musician Keith Gattis?

Gattis wasn’t destined to have the successful career as a great celebrity that he had previously envisioned or that his talent merited.

But throughout his 40 years working hard as a singer, musician, and producer, Keith Gattis rose to fame among those in the industry who knew him from Texas to Nashville to Los Angeles and everywhere in between.

Millions of people eventually heard the music Keith Gattis created. He has passed away from us in this life, but not before making an impact on country music that will last for many lifetimes.

Keith Gattis, a 52-year-old American country music performer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer, passed away in an automobile accident. 

Keith Gattis Cause of death

Gattis died on Sunday, April 23, according to close friends and colleagues like Waylon Payne, Melonie Cannon, and Jim “Moose” Brown.

Keith Gattis was almost universally adored, thus the entire country music industry was shocked to learn of his passing. Late Sunday night, Jim “Moose” Brown said, “So sad to hear the news of the unexpected loss of one of Nashville’s greatest talents…Keith Gattis.” A cherished friend who will be sorely missed.

Although the reason for his death is unknown, there is speculation that he was killed in a car accident that occurred in Nashville, Tennessee.

Keith Gattis is widely known for his song “El Cerrito Place” from his critically acclaimed album Big City Blues. This song is a Texas standard and became a national hit when Kenny Chesney released it.

Johnson City, Texas, is where Keith Gattis was born. Rock’ n’ roll with roots in the country best describes his sound. The Eagles, Tom Petty, and Dwight Yoakam can all be heard in his mournful voice and signature telescoping guitar.

A Texas classic and national hit after being covered by Kenny Chesney, Gattis’ song “El Cerrito Place” is from the critically praised album Big City Blues. Gattis is a multi-talented troubadour who has traveled as Johnny Paycheck’s guitarist and Dwight Yoakam’s bandleader and producer.

Early life and career

On May 26, 1971, Keith Gattis was born in Georgetown, Texas, a city that is close to Austin. He showed an early interest in music and started playing professionally when he was 16 years old, touring the Austin region.

As a member of the Future Farmers of America, he started a band that placed first in a state contest. As a result, he was given the chance to perform in front of 8,000 attendees at the group’s national conference in 1988.

While in college, Gattis continued to hone his guitar skills and songwriting. He moved to Nashville with $800 and anything he could pack in his pickup truck after graduating, where he began working in a music store during the day and performing at Nashville’s bars at night. The management group of Sammy Kershaw noticed him and eventually signed him to RCA.

“I was completely naïve,” he told the East Nashvillian about the start of his career. “I just knew I was going to be a giant star. I was recording really hardcore country music because that was all I was around. I got away with recording it, but that was about it. I ended up bitter and burned out. I just felt like Nashville didn’t have anything to offer me or me to offer it.”

As a songwriter

Keith Gattis has written and co-written songs for a variety of artists, including Jack Ingram, Wade Bowen, Cory Morrow, Gary Allan, Kenny Chesney, Sara Evans, Randy Travis, Gary Allan, Randy Houser, and Charlie Robison.

He collaborated in the studio, among others, with George Jones, Jon Pardi, Brandy Clark, Bruce Robison, and Sunny Sweeney.

I know people say this all the time but I mean it with all my heart when I say I would not be out here doing what I’m doing today without Gattis. He was such a loving, caring, kind, and compassionate individual who touched the lives of all those around him. We are grateful for the outpouring of love and support we have received from fans, friends, and the community during this difficult time.

Moreover, we take solace in knowing that Gattis lived a life full of love, joy, and meaning and that his legacy will live on through those whose lives he touched. Rest in peace, Keith Gattis. You will be missed but never forgotten.
