His family still resides in Thief River Falls, where he was born and raised. Several members of the family work for law enforcement organizations in that area. The family of Deputy Merrill issued this statement,

“Brody is ok physically, he’s hurt but going to be ok, but he’s devastated. One of his best friends died tonight.”

Minnesota shooting incident:

On Saturday, April 15, just before 7:30 p.m., deputies from the Pope County Sheriff’s Office, the Glenwood and Starbuck Police Departments, and a Cyrus residential address were sent to respond to a domestic complaint. Officers and a guy inside the residence engaged with firearms at one point during the attempted arrest. Two Pope County deputy sheriffs and one Starbuck police were shot.

Despite being hurt, the Starbucks employee did not go to the hospital. One police sheriff from Pope County received medical attention and was later released. The other Officer was in severe condition when he got at the hospital, and he ultimately died from his wounds. The target, a guy, was also hit and died in the gunshot exchange. The public is not currently under any ongoing threat.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension was requested to look into this event by the Pope County Sheriff’s Office. That agency will provide more details on the investigation.

Paul Anderson of Starbuck and Mary Franson of Alexandria, both representatives, together released a statement after the shooting.

The statement said,

“We are heartbroken about tonight’s incident in Cyrus — this is a tragic reminder of the dangers that our public safety professionals face protecting our communities,”

“Please join us in praying for the families of the officers, the community of Cyrus, the Starbuck Police Department, and the Pope County Sheriff’s Office.”

No information on the condition or name of the Starbuck police officer has been made public. Concerning the suspect’s condition, no information has been made public.

The corpse of Deputy Owen was transported by a large number of police vehicles to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office, where an autopsy would be conducted.

The sheriff’s office recognized Deputy Owen and Deputy Merrill three weeks ago for saving a victim from a burning house.
