Tributes have been paid to a talented young boxer John Keenan who was one of two people killed when a car crashed into the water in Galway early this morning. After the horrific incident at Menlo Pier this morning, a man named locally as John Keenan (16) and another man died, while a third is fighting for his life in hospital.

Olympic Boxing Club Galway shared the devastating news on Facebook.

It read,

“It’s with deep pain, heartbreak and sorrow that the untimely and tragic death has occurred of one of our boxers John Keenan early hours this morning.

We’re sorry to have to inform you that John Keenan has passed away in a car accident.

Car crash incident:

The city and county of Galway are still reeling from the tragic death of John Keenan in a single-car accident in the early hours of Saturday, February 11, 2023. At around 2.40 a.m., Gardai received a report of a car in the water at Menlo Pier on the outskirts of Galway city. Three teenagers were rescued from the Corrib River and transported to University Hospital Galway. Two of the teenagers died earlier this morning. They were identified as John Keenan, 16, and Wojcieck Panek, 17. A 19-year-old man died this afternoon after being in critical condition in the hospital. Christopher Stokes is his given name.

The scene at Menlo Pier is currently being preserved for technical examination, and Forensic Collision Investigators have been called in.

Gardai are urging anyone with information that can help with this investigation to contact Gaillimh Garda Station on 091 538000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.

Who was John Keenan?

John has been a member of Olympic Boxing Club Galway since he was 10 years old, after following his brother Martin Sammon. Boxing Clubs says that John always wore a big smile on his face and would go out of his way to help anyone and never let anything bring him down.
