How did John Giblin die?

John Giblin, a Scottish musician, passed away on Sunday, May 14, 2023. He died at the age of 71 in Cheltenham. In 1979, John collaborated with Kate on Peter Gabriel’s song “No Self Control.”

Who was John Giblin?

John Giblin was a Scottish musician who played the acoustic and electric bass in jazz, classical, rock, folk, and avant-garde music. 

Giblin is best known for his work in recording studios for film scores and modern music. But he has also collaborated with a variety of musicians, including Peter Gabriel, John Martyn, Elkie Brooks, Annie Lennox, Phil Collins, rock/pop band Simple Minds, and Kate Bush, David Sylvian, Jon Anderson, jazz fusion group Brand X, and Scott Walker.

Giblin then pursued acoustic bass, working on projects with musicians including pianist Alan Pasqua of Tony Williams Lifetime and drummer Peter Erskine of Weather Report.

Career:

Bass guitarist, double bassist, arranger, and all-around master session musician, Giblin was born into a musical family in Bellshill, Scotland.

He developed a love for music at a young age and went on to play in a number of rock and pop bands in his teens. In a short period of time, he relocated to London and joined the Latin band Gonzalez.

His incredible stage presence was quickly recognized, and he was soon touring and recording with famous musicians. He took over as bassist and frequently played fretless bass for the band Simple Minds.

Song of Seven by Jon Anderson, Red Cab to Manhattan by Stephen Bishop, Never For Ever by Kate Bush, Face Value by Phil Collins, EB 84 by The Everly Brothers, Vigil In a Wilderness of Mirrors by Fish, Peter Gabriel by Peter Gabriel, Criminal Tango by Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, Classics by John Martyn, and others are a few of his albums. 

Crocodile Shoes by Jimmy Nail, On Air by Alan Parsons, Back Against the Wall by Pink Floyd, Once Upon a Time by Simple Minds, Again by Alan Stivell, Ritmo by Judie Tzuke, as well as the soundtracks of the James Bond films Ratz and Tomorrow Never Dies. Moreover, he contributed to the single “Grow Old With Me” by John Lennon.

His most recent studio endeavors included continued work on a John Martyn tribute album and a two-album project with Osibisa guitarist Wendell Richardson.

Giblin died on May 14, 2023, in Cheltenham after battling illness. John and Kate have worked together extensively.

He also contributed to the tracks “Babooshka” and “Breathing” from the album “Never For Ever,” and also collaborated with her on the albums “The Sensual World,” “The Red Shoes,” “Aerial,” “Director’s Cut,” and “50 Words for Snow.”Kate hired John to play bass for her Before The Dawn gigs in 2014.

Another sad loss … John Giblin was my no 1 influence .. a fantastic bass player. I only met him once – at Utopia Studios in London. I was doing a session for The Dream Academy and he was with Elkie Brooks ..
