“It is with great sadness and with a very heavy heart that we announce the passing of Coach Jim McKeon.

Jim has spent over 20 years being a positive force for kids in Bemidji. Known to those that knew him from afar as the “Coach who ALWAYS wears shorts”, Jim will be remembered by those that had the pleasure to know him as a kind hearted friend. As devastated as we are, we take comfort knowing he’s with his daughter Gianna and will be looking over us all.

We love and will miss our dear friend.”

Who was Jim McKeon?

He was also quite physically fit. One of his lifelong friends remarked that he always had his family in his mind a recent post while they were all grieving his departure. Jim volunteered extensively throughout his life and has held the position of co-chairman of the Paul Bunyan Chapter.

At the Minnesota Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame luncheon in Minneapolis in 2022, the longtime BHS coach received the Butch Nash honor. The distinction is presented to assistant coaches in the state who contribute significantly to their school’s football program and who exhibit characteristics that define “the epitome of the ideal assistant coach.”

McKeon was referred to be “the godfather of Bemidji football” during the award ceremony. He has been a motivating force for youngsters at Bemidji High School for twenty years. His devotion to his “guys,” readiness to make sacrifices for others, and love of our sport have endured everything.

Jim will be remembered above all for being a wonderful son, a devoted husband to Hayley, and an especially loving father to Ruby, Gianna, and Rocco.

Obituary

His students referred to him as “coach” with affection. Coach was well recognized for a number of things, but arguably the most well known was his penchant to wear shorts in any weather, save for when it was extremely hot or cold outside. Many people will feel the loss of him since he will be sorely missed. His family will publish Jim McKeon’s obituary and funeral plans.

“Lost one of the best men in my life today Big Jim McKeon. We didn’t stay very close after I moved to Texas but my relationship with him in college will always have a special spot in my heart. He was always thinking about family, community and sports and as I looked through his and Haleys life together with their kids I saw it over and over in the photos the last ten years. “The news I got tonight made me sit down and weep! Big Jim McKeon you will be so missed! One of the nicest people I have known, I was looking forward to seeing you this coming weekend! I’m in shock that will not happen, and we will not talk or see you again!! the world lost a great man, friend, husband and father! our heart hurts for his wife Hayley and their kids, after a tough last year loosing one of their child to now Jim passing, I’m at a loss for words. Praying for the McKeon family! We are here for you! Hayley McKeon”

One of the worst things anyone can go through in life is losing a loved one. Any journey must have a destination at the end. The person’s time on earth has regrettably come to an end now that they have died.
