Steve Shanks, 45, of Nottinghamshire, finished the marathon in under two hours and 53 minutes but died suddenly while returning home.
His passing was revealed today by the London Marathon organizers. Runners are paying respect to Mr. Shanks, with Radio 1 DJ Adele Roberts, who also participated in the marathon on Sunday, expressing her sadness at the news.
TCS London Marathon announced this sad news on social media by sharing the following statement.
Everyone at London Marathon Events was deeply saddened to hear about the sudden death of Steve Shanks as he traveled home on Sunday 23 April after taking part in the London Marathon.
A representative for the marathon also initiated a Gofundme campaign.
What happened to Steve Shanks?
Steve, a 45-year-old resident of Bingham, Nottingham, was a very experienced runner who finished the 26.2-mile (about 42.1 km) race at 2:53:26.
He suddenly died last weekend while traveling back to his home in Nottingham. It was not known how did he died suddenly.
The statement shared on Twitter by the Marathon organizers has provided a link to a gofundme page where donations could be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society. It is believed that Mr. Shanks knew several people with Multiple Sclerosis.
On the gofundme page, the athlete’s family members wrote:
“Steve was a keen runner who was never happier than when he was out running, from his neighborhood Parkrun to the Bob Graham Round. But he was more than just a runner; he was also a musician, a knitter, and a well-known quizzer who was well-versed in terrible pop music.”
‘He was a loving husband and soulmate of his wife Jess, treasured son and son-in-law, and a much-loved friend. He will be sadly missed and in our thoughts and memories.’
His beloved wife Jessica Shanks shared a heartbreaking tribute on a Facebook post saying,
‘It’s with great sadness, that I wish to announce the loss of my wonderful husband, Stephen Shanks.
‘His passing was sudden and out of the blue. He was returning home having spent the day participating in the London Marathon.
‘As you can imagine I’m absolutely in shock and devastated.’, she wrote.

Steve Shanks’s sudden death shocked his loved ones and everyone who knew him. Although his cause of death was not known yet.
“The cause of death will be determined later through medical examination”, according to the statement.
The London Marathon also known as the TCS London Marathon is an annual marathon held in London, United Kingdom. It is the second-largest annual road race in the country, after the Great North Run in Newcastle.
More than 48,000 runners, a new record, ran through the rain to complete the renowned city route. They included celebrities including Mark Wright from Towie, Chris Evans from Virgin Radio, and Kirsty Gallacher from Sky Sports.
Kenya’s Kelvin Kiptum won the elite men’s race in 2 hours, 1 minute, 27 seconds, and Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands won the elite women’s race in 2 hours, 18 minutes, 33 seconds.
