Who is Pharoah Sanders?

Pharoah Sanders was regarded as a musical icon. Nobody else can play the saxophone like him. He is continuously looking for a new song to play. He was a fantastic artist from California. He moved to New York after 1960 and joined John Coltrane’s band.

Pharoah Sanders Early Life

Farrell Sanders was born in Arkansas on October 13, 1940, and began playing clarinet and drums in church before taking up the alto saxophone in high school. His decision to switch to his legendary tenor saxophone was driven by need.

“I was constantly trying to figure out what I wanted to do for a living.” “What I really wanted to do was play the saxophone—it was one of my favourite instruments,” Sanders told The New Yorker. “I’d borrow the school saxophone.” If you wished, you could rent it every day. It wasn’t a particularly good horn. It was a little beat-up and out of shape.

Pharoah Sanders Career

In Oakland, California, Pharoah Sanders began his professional career on the tenor saxophone. After playing in rhythm and blues bands, he relocated to New York City in 1961. Sanders then joined John Coltrane’s final quartet, where he typically played extended, discordant solos.

He appeared on Michael Mantler and Carla Bley’s Jazz Composer’s Orchestra Association CD The Jazz Composer’s Orchestra in 1968, alongside Cecil Taylor, Don Cherry, Larry Coryell, and Gato Barbieri.

Sanders recorded an album with electronic music producer Floating Points and the London Symphony Orchestra in 2020. The album, Promises, was released in March 2021, making it Sanders’ first big new record in in two decades. The album received widespread praise from critics, with Pitchfork calling it “a definite late-career masterpiece.”

Record label Luaka Bop is reporting the death of the great saxophonist Pharoah Sanders at age 81—a tremendous loss of a major innovator. Sanders’s last album for the label, Promises (2021) was widely cited, by myself and others as one of the finest jazz recordings of the decade.

RIP Pharoah Sanders. Very sad news to wake up to. Yesterday we celebrated Trane’s birth and today we say goodbye to one of his greatest students. The giants of this music are departing. I’m very lucky to have seen Pharoah live. Also lucky to have his music to live with forever.
