Irene Cara passed away from an undisclosed cause in her Florida home, her publicist confirmed late Friday. Her spokesperson confirmed her death.

The publicist Judith A. Moose wrote, “It is with profound sadness that on behalf of her family I announce the passing of Irene Cara. I can’t believe I’ve had to write this, let alone release the news. Please share your thoughts and memories of Irene. I’ll be reading each and every one of them and know she’ll be smiling from Heaven. She adored her fans. “

Cara received training in music, dancing, and acting as a youngster and made early television and stage appearances in the 1970s, including ones on PBS and Johnny Carson’s “The Tonight Show.” But she shot to popularity when she was cast in the 1980 musical “Fame.”

Irene Cara passed away at the age of 63. “Irene’s family has requested privacy as they process their grief,” Moose wrote. “She was a beautifully gifted soul whose legacy will live forever through her music and films.”

Cara was initially a dancer, but she later had the role of Coco Hernandez written for her, and she sang the title track. Irene passed away at her Florida home.

With the title track of “Flashdance,” the movie starring Jennifer Beals as an ambitious dancer. Cara later won a Grammy and an Oscar awards. Irene continued to pursue a dual career in music and acting, making appearances on television and in movies including “City Heat” and “D.C. Cab.” She keeps performing in live musicals and onstage.

Who was Irene Cara?

Irene Cara Escalera who was born on March 18, 1959, was an American singer and actress. In 1984, Cara sang and co-wrote “Flashdance… What a Feeling” (from the film Flashdance), for which she received an Academy Award for Best Original Song and a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. 

Cara is also well-known for singing the movie’s theme song, “Fame,” as well as for her performance as Coco Hernandez in the 1980 film Fame. Prior to her fame with Fame, Cara starred as Sparkle Williams, the titular character, in the original musical drama Sparkle from 1976.

Early life

Cara was born as the youngest of five children in The Bronx, New York City. Her mother, Louise, a theatre usher, is Cuban-American, and her father, Gaspar Escalera, a former saxophone and factory worker, is Puerto Rican. 

 Irene Cara was one of five finalists in the “Little Miss America” pageant when she was three years old. She started out learning the piano by ear before taking music, acting, and dance classes when she was five years old.

 Her professional singing and dance debut was on Spanish-language television. She had early TV appearances on Johnny Carson’s The Tonight Show and The Original Amateur Hour (singing in Spanish).  She was a regular on PBS’ educational program from 1971 to 1972. Cara recorded a Latin-market Spanish-language record and an English Christmas album in her early days.

Irene Cara career:

Cara began her professional singing and dancing career on Spanish-language television before appearing on programs like “The Original Amateur Hour,” “The Ed Sullivan Show,” and “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.” 

She also performed in a number of Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, such as “Ain’t Misbehavin’,” “The Me Nobody Knows,” “Maggie Flynn,” with Shirley Jones and Tony Award nominee Jack Cassidy, and “Via Galactica,” with Raul Julia. She obtained the lead role in the movie Aaron Loves Angela before she reached her teenage. 

Her portrayal in the film was so exceptional that she was chosen to play the lead role in the now-classic musical drama “Sparkle.” Irene’s appearances in “Roots: The Next Generation,” in which she co-starred with James Earl Jones and Diahann Carroll. “The Guyanna Tragedy: The Jim Jones Story,” in which she collaborated once more with James Earl Jones and LeVar Burton. It demonstrated her enormous range as an actress. 

She released the albums “Anyone Can See” and “What a Feeling” in 1982 and 1983, respectively, and subsequent hits included “Breakdance,” “The Dream,” “You Were Made for Me,” and “Why Me.” She also worked with Placido Domingo on a song in 1985. Both “Breakdance” and “Why Me” would reach the Top 10. 

Awards and honors:

Cara won two distinctions in March 2004, including entry into the Ciboney Cafe’s Hall of Fame and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the sixth annual Prestige Awards. 

With her current all-female band, Hot Caramel, Cara won the third round of the NBC television competition Hit Me, Baby, One More Time in June 2005 by playing “Flashdance (What a Feeling)” and a rendition of Anastacia’s song “I’m Outta Love.” 

Cara won Golden Globe Award for best song for her Flashdance in 1980. She won the 1983 Academy Award for Best Song (Oscar) for Flashdance song. She won two Grammy Awards for Flashdance.

Cara opened the pre-match entertainment at the 2006 AFL Grand Final in Melbourne with a performance of “Flashdance (What a Feeling)”. In 2006, Cara contributed a dance single, titled “Forever My Love”, to the compilation album titled Gay Happening Vol. 12.
