Howie Kane aka Howard Kirchembaum of Jay & The Americans passed away at the age of 78. 

Dennis Tufano announced this sad news on the social media page. The statement reads,

Howie Kane from Jay and the Americans has passed. He was the greatest guy, the real deal and funny. AKA The Chick Magnet will be missed. A piece of my heart goes with him. God Bless my friend. Condolences to Jay and the Americans family and friends. Rest in Peace Howie.”

Howie is survived by his wife Gayle and his children Sammy, Sarah, Justin and his brother Stuart and his family.

Who was Howie Kane?

Howard Kane (born Howard Kirchembaum, 1941) was an American singer. He was a part of Jay and the Americans and was also known by the name Howie Kane. He sang vocals for the band Jay & the Americans. 

From 1960 to 1973, Howie was one of two singers for Jay & The Americans (along with Jay Traynor), and he rejoined the reformed group in 2006.

Legendary songwriters Leiber and Stoller, who wrote Elvis Presley’s ‘Hound Dog’ and ‘Jailhouse Rock,’ ‘Yakety Yak’ for The Coasters, and Ben E. King’s ‘Stand By Me,’ gave Jay & The American their moniker. ‘She Cried’ was Jay & The Americans’ debut American hit. (no 5, 1962). 

Come A Little Bit Closer peaked at number three in 1964, Cara Mia peaked at number four, and This Magic Moment peaked at number six in 1968. 

About Jay & The Americans 

Jay & The Americans is an American rock group who started in the late 1950s. Between 1962 and 1969, Jay & The Americans had 10 Top 40 singles in the USA.

In 2017, “Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2” featured the song “Come A Little Bit Closer,” which went on to sell an additional 2.6 million copies.

John “Jay” Traynor, a co-lead vocalist and founding member, passed away in 2014. Up until Howie’s passing, Sandy Deanne was still on the road with him as Jay & The Americans.

Howie met with the car accident recently. Jay and The Americans has shared their heartfelt condolences to Howie saying,

“Jay and The Americans have lost a piece of their history. One of the original Americans, Howie Kane AKA The Chick Magnet has passed. Howie was more than just an original member, he was a good friend to everyone who knew him.”

“His easy going personality both on and off the stage was cherished by all of the other members of the group. On behalf of Sandy, Marty, and I, our hearts are broken but Howie’s spirit will still be on the stage with us as we move forward.”

“On a personal note, Howie was a great friend to me and ,along with Sandy, was there when I started my journey with Jay and The Americans. After 16+ years on stage with Howie, it will be hard not to see him up there. Godspeed Howie!!!!!”
