The actress passed away “after complications following a major operation for a perforated colon,” her agent Matthew Lacey stated in a statement on behalf of the family.
Her husband (Alan Leith) and niece were by her bedside when she passed away last Thursday in Brighton, according to a statement. Gwyneth will be sadly missed by her devoted family, friends, and countless viewers who watched her on various TV shows.

Who was Gwyneth Powell?
Gwyneth Powell, an English actress best remembered for playing headmistress Bridget McCluskey in the BBC television series Grange Hill for eleven seasons between 1981 and 1991, was born on July 5, 1946, and passed away on August 8, 2022.
Powell was raised in Cheadle County Grammar School for Girls. While there, she received praise for her performance as Fat Urs in the National Youth Theatre’s production of Ben Jonson’s Bartholemew Fair. Powell was born in Levenshulme, Manchester.
She received her teaching training at the Goldsmiths University of London but decided to pursue an acting career in repertory theatre. The Guardians, a 1971 LWT dystopian drama series, gave her her first significant television role.
Before being cast in Grange Hill, where she played “strict but fair” headmistress Bridget (“The Midget”) McClusky for eleven years, she was frequent, if the small, character in many television plays.
About her position, she stated in 2008 Mrs. McClusky was originally intended to be a “twin set and pearls” character, but I didn’t want to portray it that way because I was still fairly young.
She was quite stylish and fashion-forward when it came to her clothing, so we started there. Powell reprised her role as Mrs. McClusky from Grange Hill in 2009 for a cameo appearance in an episode of Ashes to Ashes that was set in 1982 using archival material and some newly recorded lines. She additionally performed at the Salisbury Playhouse in Arsenic and Old Lace.
Powell played Nana in the 2010 film The Gemma Factor. She was cast as Nina Martin’s grandmother, who ends up in the hospital but is subsequently discharged, in the adolescent drama House of Anubis from 2011 to 2013. She appeared in seven of the episodes. In the 2013 comedy Man Down on Channel 4, she played Greg Davies’ mother Polly Davies.
Private life
She currently resides in Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex, where she is married to actor Alan Leith[4]. She also supports the Hurstpierpoint Players, a local theatre company.
