Gordon Pinsent, a Canadian acting legend passed away on February 25, 2023. His family announced his passing in a statement late on Saturday.

The statement written on behalf of Gordon’s family by his son-in-law, the actor Peter Keleghan reads,

Gordon Pinsent’s daughters Leah, and Beverly, and his son Barry, would like to announce the passing of their father peacefully in sleep today with his family at his side”

“Gordon passionately loved this country and its people, purpose, and culture to his last breath.”

Who was Gorden Pinsent?

Pinsent was born in Grand Falls, Newfoundland, the sixth child and youngest of six. Florence “Flossie” (née Cooper) was his mother, and she was from Clifton, Newfoundland.

Stephen Arthur Pinsent, his father, was a cobbler and paper mill worker from Dildo, Newfoundland. At the age of 17, Pinsent started performing on stage in the 1940s.

He quickly began acting in CBC radio dramas, and then transitioned to television and movies. He took a break from acting in the early 1950s and enlisted in the Canadian Army, serving four years in The Royal Canadian Regiment.

Gordon Pinsent’s extensive and diverse acting career and his numerous roles. Stratford Festival Heritage Award nominee, Gordon Pinsent had a long and successful acting career that spanned more than 60 years.

He acted in numerous movies and television shows, including Due South, The Red Green Show, The Shipping News, and Away From Her.

He also played in The Forest Rangers, Quentin Durgens, M.P., the original Street Legal, and the Republic of Doyle.

Gorden Pinsent’s acting career:

According to his biography on the Canada Wall of Fame website, Pinsent started performing in the 1940s at the age of 17 and later moved into TV and movies. His first acting credit on IMDB is for a TV movie from 1957.

Pinsent’s professional acting career began in 1957 at Winnipeg’s Theatre 77 (later known as the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre).

He appeared in other plays in the years that followed in Winnipeg, Toronto, and at the Stratford Festival. He had appearances in Scarlett Hill and The Forest Rangers at the start of the 1960s.

Pinsent has since become a fixture on Canadian television, having appeared in shows such as Quentin Durgens, M.P., A Gift to Last (which he developed), The Red Green Show, Due South, Wind at My Back, and Power Play.

Pinsent has appeared in The Rowdyman, Who Has Seen the Wind, John and the Missus, The Shipping News, and Away from Her.

The President of the United States in the 1970 science fiction cult classic Colossus: The Forbin Project was possibly his most well-known early film performance.

He played Donald Crowhurst in the character of Horse Latitudes, which is now a part of Deep Water. He received the Order of Canada’s official designation in 1979, and in 1998, he was elevated to Companion.

Other roles:

Pinsent penned the screenplays for John and the Missus and The Rowdyman. He received the title of Member of the Royal Society of Canada in 2006.

During the summers of 2008, 2010, and 2011, Pinsent hosted a radio documentary series called The Late Show on CBC Radio One, which featured extended obituaries of prominent Canadians who the producers felt merited attention.

Pinsent starred in the early short film Life Doesn’t Frighten Me by Canadian filmmaker Stephen Dunn, which garnered several honors and a cash reward of $30,000 at the CBC Short Film Face-Off.

In 2013, the movie also received honors from the Tribeca Film Festival and the Toronto Student Film Festival.

His most recent appearance was as Maurice Becker in the episode of the Canadian television series Republic of Doyle on February 3, 2010. He was also a featured guest reader on Bookaboo.

His most recent acting role was a voiceover for a cartoon in 2021. Pinsent, a Companion of the Order of Canada since 1998, has also received numerous ACTRA, Genie, Gemini, and Dora awards. In addition, he was an author, director, and dramatist.
