How did Chas Newby die?

Chas Newby, a former bass player for The Beatles who was a part of the group in its early years, is said to have passed away early on Tuesday.

Social media has been overwhelmed with condolences to the musician, after his death news broke out. This sad news was announced by his brother, Roag Best on social media in the following statement,

Both Pete and I and the whole Best family were devasted to hear the very sad news with regards to one of the family’s closest friends Chas Newby passing last night. Many of you will know him for playing bass guitar for both The Beatles and The Quarrymen, but to us he was laid back Chas with a big smile. We’ll truly miss him. Forever in our thoughts. God bless you Chas x.

Who was Chas Newby?

Charles Newby was born on 18 June 1941. He was a British musician who briefly played bass for the Beatles in December 1960, when Stuart Sutcliffe was still in Hamburg pursuing his art career.

The Beatles were lacking a bass guitarist when they initially returned from West Germany. Chas Newby was suggested by Pete Best. Though he was currently enrolled in university and had previously been a member of The Black Jacks (Best’s group),

Newby consented to perform with the Beatles because they were on vacation. In December 1960, Newby performed four times with the Beatles: on December 17 in Liverpool’s Casbah Club, on December 24 in Liscard’s Grosvenor Ballroom, on December 27 in Litherland Town Hall, and on December 31 in Liverpool’s Casbah Club.

The Beatles’ second trip to West Germany was requested by John Lennon, but Newby opted to go back to university.

Paul McCartney, who had previously played guitar and piano, unwillingly took over the position of bass guitarist after John Lennon and George Harrison both declined to do so.

Newby lived in Alcester and worked as a maths teacher at Droitwich Spa High School. He also played in the Racketts, a charity band. As of 2016, Newby has played live with the Quarrymen, the group that preceded the Beatles.

Sad to hear of the passing of Chas Newby, a Beatle for two weeks in 1960. ‘People sometimes don’t believe me when I say I’ve no regrets, but I really haven’t. I have enjoyed my life immensely.

The Pre-Amps posted,

RIP Chas Newby (The Quarrymen and briefly a member of The Beatles). We were lucky enough to be on the same bill at Best Fest last August, still sounded great on the bass.
