Later, he made a comeback to play Wilfrid Mott, Donna’s grandfather on the resurrected TV series, which starred Catherine Tate. Bernard Cribbins, OBE, is an English character actor, voice actor, and musical comedian. He has been working professionally for more than 50 years.
He first gained notoriety in 1960s movies, and he’s continued to work steadily ever since. Bernard Cribbins, a legendary actor, was born in Oldham, Lancashire, on December 29, 1928. With his mother Ethel, father John, and two siblings, he lived modest childhood.
When he was 13 years old, Cribbins dropped out of school to work as an assistant stage manager while also appearing in minor roles.
Before doing his National Service with the Parachute Regiment in 1947, he went on to become an apprentice at the Oldham Repertory Theatre. In the 1960s, the actor rose to fame as a result of novelty songs like Right Said Fred and The Hole In The Ground. He rose to prominence and became well-known in the UK thanks to his work on Doctor Who and other programs.
Cribbins received a special prize at the British Academy Children’s Awards two years prior and an OBE in 2011 for his contributions to drama. He moved in with her for a long time in Weybridge, Surrey, after they were married in 1955 to Gillian McBarnet.

Later, he co-starred with Peter Sellers in the comedy Two-Way Stretch, which was about a bunch of inmates plotting to escape from prison, heist a train, and then return to their cells to create the ideal alibi. As he followed up with The Wrong Arm of the Law and Crooks in Cloisters, crime—at least on screen—kept paying.
His two comedic records from 1962, Right Said Fred and Hole In The Ground, both made it to the UK Top 10 and were produced by George Martin, who would soon sign the Beatles.
Cribbins ultimately decided to leave the specialty record industry. After a while, novelty tends to go away, he observed. But a few years later, he was requested to perform Hole in the Ground at St. Martin-in-the-Field for George Martin’s memorial ceremony. It was a success, stated Cribbins with pride. Elton John hugged me and asked, “Why didn’t you do Right Said Fred as well?” after it received a lot of praise.
Cribbins, a gifted comedian, caught the team’s eye when portraying Midshipman Poop-Decker in carrying on Jack. As Carry on Spying continued, Cribbins was “shot point blank in the face by an extra with a gun,” a production that suddenly appeared less entertaining.
