Barbara Morrison, a Los Angeles jazz legend who performed on two Grammy-nominated albums, produced another, and founded a performing arts theatre and jazz/blues museum in Leimert Park, died today at the age of 72.

Morrison’s friend, Cathy Segal-Garcia, who started a GoFundMe page when Morrison was hospitalized for cardiovascular disease in early March, wrote on the page Wednesday that Morrison was a “warrior to the end.”

“… It is our emotion that rather than struggle with what was sure to be a very uncomfortable life for her from here on,” she wrote, “it was her blessed time to go.”

As of Wednesday night, the page had raised more than $13,000, which will be used in part to cover funeral expenditures.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of jazz and blues legend Barbara Morrison,” the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz tweeted Wednesday afternoon. “She mentored our college vocalists, and many of our students have performed with her.” She founded (the Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center) and the California Jazz & Blues Museum in Leimert Park, and she was a pillar in the music community.”

Barbara Morrison’s Career

During his 60-plus-year career, he shared the stage with Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles, Kenny Burrell, Hank Crawford, Nancy Wilson, Mel Tormé, and Ray Brown, among others. She also performed with Count Basie’s Orchestra and Doc Severinsen’s Big Band.

According to the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, where she served as an adjunct professor of global jazz studies, she performed at Carnegie Hall, toured Europe with Ray Charles and sang at the North Sea, Bern and Playboy jazz festivals.

She began performing at age 10 in Michigan, and over the course of her career appeared on more than 20 recordings, two of which earned Grammy nominations. Her Blue Lady Records was nominated in 1999 as producer of Al McKibbon’s album “Tumbao Para Los Confueros de Mi Vida (For All the Conga Drummers in My Life).”

The Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs mourned her passing, calling her an “L.A. treasure.”
