How did Andrew Duncan die?
The Second City theatre revealed on Monday that Andrew Duncan, a pioneering performer who appeared in the group’s inaugural Chicago review in 1959, had passed away.
After appearing in Excelsior & Additional Outcries alongside Barbara Harris and Severn Darden, Duncan went on to appear in several other Second City productions, including one that ran on Broadway. He also enjoyed success in both television and film during the 1960s and 1970s.
Duncan was a member of the Chicago theatre groups Compass Players and Playwrights Theater Club before the founding of Second City, sharing the stage with future celebrities like Mike Nichols, Elaine May, Shelley Berman, and Harvey Korman.
According to Sheldon Patinkin, a colleague of Andrew Duncan’s, in his book The Second City: Backstage at the World’s Greatest Comedy Theatre, Andrew Duncan was the archetypal straight man and interviewer for both The Compass and Second City.
In one of the Second City’s most renowned sequences, Football is coming to the University of Chicago, he used his straight-man abilities to play a compassionate trainer trying to turn a collection of pointy-headed academics on the Hyde Park campus into grill stars.
The blockbusters Love Story (1970), Slapshot (1977), and An Unmarried Woman were among Duncan’s filmography (1978).
