His daughter-in- law shared the devastating news on Facebook,

“It’s with enormous grief that I share the news that Harry Lorayne passed away, just a few weeks shy of his 97th birthday. I am at a loss for words.

Harry was the most supportive and loving father-in-law that I could have ever asked for. He cheered for me and for my many passions; he adored my chocolate chip cookies, naming them “Beth’s Best;” loved the meals Robert and I created together; and always asked about whatever project I was working on.

I am utterly heartbroken. He lived such an incredible life and influenced so many people, both by improving their memory skills and with magic. Harry, himself, was magic.

I am forever grateful and forever honored to have been a part of his life and to have cared for him – he will be immensely missed by Robert, our daughter Vivi, and by me.

With love, Elizabeth Lorayne.”

Who was Harry Lorayne?

Harry Lorayne was a memory-training specialist and author. Lorayne was born in the Lower East Side of New York City and studied magic in Hamilton Fish Park in the 1930s. He started working as a table magician at Billy Reed’s Small Club in New York at 70 E. 55th St. when he was 18 years old.

Victor Jory, a well-known actor known for playing a magical detective, visited the club regularly. When Lorayne first began doing memory tricks for Jory, her performance style was altered by Jory’s positive reaction. When Lorayne was six or seven years old, he witnessed his first card trick and knew right away that he had to learn how to do it on his own.

To get the $.02 deposit on the empty milk bottles and buy a deck of cards, he took them from the front of apartments in the tenement where he resided. He persevered and came up with eight different methods to do the stunt.

After hosting his local show, The Prof. Magic Show, in 1951, Lorayne started performing on national television in 1958. He made his television debut on I’ve Got a Secret, where he demonstrated his memory for audience members’ names, and went on to appear on The Ed Sullivan Show and several other programs, including Jack Paar, The Merv Griffin Show, The Mike Douglas Show, The Regis Philbin Show, Good Morning America, The Today Show, That’s Incredible, and David Susskind.

He appeared 24 times on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson as a regular performer. Lorayne would introduce himself to each member of the club he was visiting while standing next to the president to show off his memory. The maximum number of members in a club is 1,500.

After an hour and a half, Lorayne would talk for around 20 minutes about the memory before asking if anybody had any questions. He pledged to provide a thousand bucks to each questioner whose name he could not recall. Every person in the audience had a name he could recall.

Another notable accomplishment of Lorayne’s was her flawless memorization and recall of data from phone books. He would greet everyone in the crowd as they entered at just about every public event he made to show off his recall skills, and he would then ask everyone he met to stand before starting his act.

After he accurately identified them by name and pointed to them, he would typically invite the entire audience to take a seat. In New York, he ran a memory school with professors like Bob Elliott and Darwin Ortiz.

Several prestigious businesses adopted his Remembering Power video course as a component of their training programmes. Beyond the age of 90, he had been actively writing books and giving talks.

According to Randy Wakeman,”Harry Lorayne is the most influential author, publisher, and teacher of magic routines in the world today.”

The monthly publication Apocalypse, which was founded and launched with Richard J. Kaufman but was terminated after the first year, was written and published by Lorayne for twenty years.

He was my “magic dad.” This is a photo from his 90th birthday in New York (six years ago), after I did a silly trick in his honor. I don’t recall who grabbed this shot, but thank you. Harry, Harry, Harry. You live on in my heart.”

Stephen Silva Magic wrote: “Harry Lorayne’s contributions to magic, specifically card and close up magic, influenced and inspired multiple generations of magicians. His Apocalypse set is still one of my favorite book sets. Every once in a while, I’ll pull a volume off the shelf just to flip through it and discover something new. I’m glad I got to meet the man and see him lecture in person. The man who never forgets will never be forgotten. RIP Harry.”

John wrote: “A sad day with the passing of Harry Lorayne. He is the one person responsible for inspiring me to pursue a career in magic . He was a genius and after not seeing me for weeks ( we used to hang out in NY after Tannen’s closed ) he remembered my name , first and last name . After that impressive feat , I not only bought all of his memory books but I now own an extensive collection of his magic books and Apocalypse issues . You will be missed but always remembered . RIP HARRY”
