Grangetown Attempted Murder: What happened? Suspect & Motive Explained

Grangetown Attempted Murder: An investigation into an attempted murder has been launched by Cleveland Police.

On Thursday, the alleged incident allegedly took place in Grangetown. It featured a VW Golf that struck a man riding an electric bike as it was traveling down Birchington Avenue.

The electric bike’s 22-year-old rider suffered severe head injuries and was sent to the hospital by ambulance, where he was pronounced dead today because of his injuries.

What happened in Grangetown?

A 22-year-old guy was engaged in a collision with a VW Golf while using an electric bike.

At about 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 6, the incident took place. The VW Golf was moving toward St. Hilda’s Church while traveling along Birchington Avenue in Grangetown.

The 22-year-old electric bike rider was rushed to the hospital with “severe” head injuries, where he was still being treated.

The North East Ambulance Service and Cleveland Police were both on the site of the event. The NEAS acknowledged that they sent out a quick response car with a paramedic team and a HEMS doctor.

An official with the North East Ambulance Service stated: “We were called at 10.24 pm to reports of a pedestrian and car incident on Birchington Road. We sent out a quick response vehicle with a paramedic team and a HEMS doctor, who treated a patient for a head injury before transporting them to James Cook Hospital.

UPDATE: Today Cleveland police announced the sad news that the bike rider died of his injuries. The statement reads,

A 22-year-old man who was receiving treatment in James Cook University Hospital following an alleged incident in Grangetown on Thursday evening, 6th October, has sadly passed away this evening (Sunday 9th October).

Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends at this extremely difficult time.

 

What did the police have to say?

Three police cars, including an undercover police car, are reportedly reported to have been there.

A police spokeswoman issued the following statement shortly after the incident: “We would ask anybody with private CCTV and residing in the Birchington Avenue neighborhood, between Trunk Road and Clynes Road, to come forward.

Additionally, Cleveland Police is requesting that anybody who noticed the car in that area, as well as anyone who witnessed the RTC or has dashcam video, call them at 101 and reference case number 179548.

A section of Birchington Avenue was blocked off. All restrictions are now removed.

 

Suspect: Turned out to be an attempted murder

A man, age 21, was detained in relation to the incident and later released on bail awaiting more investigation.

The police stated on Sunday that a 22-year-old male they were looking to talk to in connection with an alleged attempted murder in Grangetown on Thursday had been detained on suspicion of the crime and will undergo investigation.

Later on Sunday, the force added: “A 21-year-old male has been detained on suspicion of attempted murder. He was sought by investigators looking into a suspected incident in Grangetown on Thursday. He is being questioned, and investigations are ongoing.

A 30-year-old woman has also been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Motive behind the incident is still under investigation.

 

Reports from witnesses

Despite living directly across from the scene of the incident, a young couple who wished to remain anonymous said: “We didn’t see anything but around half ten last night we heard a huge screech followed by a crash. We looked outside at about 10.35 and saw an ambulance, a critical care ambulance, and police begin to cordon off the road.

“The vehicle sped off after knocking someone off their bike in a layby. Prior to this morning’s rain, the road was covered with tyre prints.
