Who was Governor Carlo Jorge Joan “Guido” Reyes?

The Nacionalista Party’s (NP) Carlo Jorge Joan “Guido” Reyes served as the governor of Negros Oriental. The governor is tasked with performing all duties of the provincial chief executive, including acting as the sangguniang panlalawigan’s (provincial board) presiding officer, appointing all officials and staff members of the sangguniang panlalawigan aside from those mandated by the Local Government Code of 1991, and taking over as governor for the remaining years of a term in the event of a permanent vacancy.

Following the death of Governor Roel Degamo earlier in the day, Vice Governor Carlo Jorge Joan Reyes of Negros Oriental was sworn in as the new governor of the province on March 4. Before Interior and Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos, Reyes took the oath of office. During a Saturday distribution of help for 4Ps recipients at his home in Pamplona, Negros Oriental, Roel Degamo, the governor of that region, and five other individuals were shot and killed.

Six suspects, armed with firearms and with clothes resembling those of the military, broke into the governor’s mansion in Pamplona town on Saturday, according to the police. In the lengthy history of political assassinations in the Philippines, Degamo is the most recent victim. Since the general election of last year, at least three people have been shot, including him.

The provincial government announced on Wednesday that Roel Degamo’s replacement as governor of Negros Oriental, Jorge Carlo Joan “Guido” Reyes, had passed away on May 31.

Reyes’ daughter had called to inform her of the governor’s death. Reyes passed away around two months after his predecessor and ally Roel Degamo was assassinated in his home in Pamplona, Negros Oriental, in March.

She added that she informed Vice Governor Manuel “Chaco” Sagarbarria Jr. on Reyes’ initiatives during their meeting. Sagarbarria is anticipated to become governor soon.

Karen Molas, the provincial administrator, stated that Reyes passed away after battling a protracted illness but withheld any further information.

Reyes passed away around two months after his predecessor and ally Roel Degamo were killed in his Pamplona, Negros Oriental, private property in March.

Several weeks after Degamo’s passing, Reyes joined the governor’s office at the provincial capitol in Dumaguete City and swore to carry on the initiatives that his comrade had begun. Two governors of the Negros Oriental died immediately for the first time in more than ten years.

After winning the gubernatorial elections in 2010. former Governor Emilio Macias II passed away that year. Agustin Perdices, Macias’ replacement, passed away in January 2011 a short while later.
