Who was Fr. Enrico D. Gonzales?

The former dean of the Faculty of Philosophy, Professor Emeritus Rev. Fr. Enrico D. Gonzales, O.P., PhD, reminded the retreat attendees that we need to distinguish between immediate problems and long-term issues. He explained that in order to distinguish between the two, we are both “Children of the Earth”—worried about what to eat, what to dress, what course to take, promotions, and pay—and “Children of God”—a child of love, which is self-giving. Both, according to Fr. Gonzales, are necessary, but it does not imply that they are equally important. What matters more is being a child of God. Daily worries are significant, according to Fr. Gonzales, since they are necessary for survival. He did warn, nonetheless, that, “if we become too fixated with survival, the law will be that of the jungle. Only the fittest will reign. Do not be afraid of struggle. It means you do not want to be an extremist.”

Fr. Gonzales stated that one-sidedness is the heresy of modern life. He also emphasized the importance of balance to the Thomasians, just as we strive to strike a balance between our immediate and long-term concerns. Fr. Gonzales advised against viewing life as a constant contest between two options; rather, he advised holding onto our faith in the face of difficulty because, like the Nazareno during the procession, no matter how slowly things move along, “we will still get there.”
