Who was DJ Arid Cooper?

Arif Cooper was a Jamaican artist, music producer, worldwide DJ, event organizer, radio host for the RJR Communications Group, and CEO of Fresh Ear Productions/AMC Music Ltd. (FAME FM).

Arif was introduced to music from an early age. His Third World-born father, Michael “Ibo” Cooper, outed him to the music business at a young age by enrolling him in piano lessons, exposing him to a sizable record collection, and giving him access to see legends like Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, Bruce Springsteen, and Sting (musician) in various studio and performance settings. When Arif was old enough, Ibo took him along on tour as a member of the road crew for the band Third World. Based on his prior experience with the Jamaican sound system culture, Arif started DJing in 1991 for everything from home parties and neighborhood dances to nightclubs, and soon after, for large worldwide dancehall events and festivals. He was a founding member of Syndicate Disco from 1992 to 1997, and after departing, he established himself internationally by DJing at events in New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Houston, Atlanta, and Japan, among other cities. He has performed at Club Soul in Atlanta and Club Mirage in Jamaica, and he has toured with musicians including Sean Paul, Voice Mail, and Alaine.

After contributing to the creation of 2 Hard Records, Cooper returned to production in 1997 and established Fresh Ear Productions. In addition, he joined FAME FM in 1998 as a broadcaster/radio disc jockey, a position he still has today. Arif was also a driving influence behind the street festival Fresh Fridays from 2010 to 2014. Vybz Kartel, Sean Paul, Tami Chynn, Jah Cure, Alaine, Elephant Man, Baby Cham, Demarco, Aidonia, Konshens, Wayne Marshall, Christopher Martin, and Charly Black have all benefited from his contributions to their careers. Sean Paul’s “Hold My Hand,” Tami Chynn’s “Over and Over,” and Demarco’s “True Friend” to rhythms as universally popular as Guardian Angel, Relationships, Global, and New Money, he has produced hit tracks in a wide range of genres.
