“We are very sad to report that Avery Crounse, director of the groundbreaking folk horror film EYES OF FIRE has passed away unexpectedly at age 71.

It was an honour to work with Avery on the restoration of his long-unavailable masterwork (after years of trying to locate him), to hear his stories, discover his inspirations, and strangest of all, to learn that Canadian band the Tragically Hip had named one of their albums after one of his photographs (which they also used as the cover of the album). He was one of a kind and so was his film.

Rest easy, Avery.”

The late George Crounse and Eleanor Buchanan Crounse’s son, Avery Crounse, was born in Paducah, Kentucky, on April 15, 1951. He was a prominent photographer and a filmmaker who also had his own production business.

Avery Crounse, an independent filmmaker, wrote and directed the 1983 American folk horror movie Eyes of Fire (also known as Cry Blue Sky). Vestron Video released the movie on VHS on June 26, 1987.

It was reported on August 24, 2021 that Severin Films will release Eyes of Fire on Blu-ray on December 7, 2021, containing a fresh 4K restoration from the original film materials, after decades of being seldom available on home media. The movie will also be released on Blu-ray as part of Severin’s limited edition collection “All the Haunts Be Ours,” which also includes 20 other folk horror films from across the world.

His spouse, Jessica Sater of Charleston, South Carolina, two daughters, Erin B. Fenet and Caitlin Baldwin Reuterskiold of Darien, Georgia and Stockholm, Sweden, respectively, as well as two grandkids, Astrid and Isabela Reuterskiold, survive him. George and Jincy Crounse, Avery’s siblings, predeceased him.
