They are currently in a state of grief over the loss of a remarkable individual who personified the true spirit of their football team. Declan joined Donegal Town FC when he was just three years old and proudly served as the team mascot. From then, he grew into a superb athlete, setting an excellent example for his teammates as he rose through the junior levels and eventually into the senior team, which he later represented and led for many years.
Declan, though, made significant contributions off the pitch as well. He held many significant positions such as senior team management, club PRO, treasurer, and secretary as he passionately dedicated himself to the improvement of the club. He donned each hat with dedication and enthusiasm, always prioritizing the club’s best interests.
Declan’s three daughters joining the club as beloved members was one of his happiest moments. As he saw them put on the Town uniforms with the newly organized setup of underage girls, he beamed with pride. Declan cheered on his daughter Katie as she took the field for the girls’ team just two weeks ago on the Hospital Field.
All those who knew Declan experienced delight and laughter from his contagious humor and his recognizable huge smile. Everyone he came in contact with was made happier by his presence, which also improved the Donegal Town FC club and its members’ life.

Declan “Decy” Barr’s demise has left Donegal Town FC inconsolable, and they have posted on Facebook their sincere condolences.

“In this time of immeasurable loss, we extend our deepest sympathy to Declan’s loving wife Laura, his adored daughters Ellie, Katie, and Molly, his devoted parents Patsy and May, his brother Martin, his sisters Carol and Lisa and his extended family members and friends.
May you find comfort and strength in the memories you shared and the love that surrounded Declan throughout his incredible journey.
As a club, we will forever cherish the moments we spent with Declan and honor his memory by continuing to embody the values he held dear.
Rest in peace, dear Declan. You will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.”
Remains will be in repose at the family home on Monday, June 12, from 2 pm until 9 pm. Tuesday at 11 a.m., St. Bridget’s Church in Ballintra will hold a funeral mass; following that, a burial will take place in the nearby cemetery.
