Who was Danson Lamothe?

Danson Lamothe was a volunteer fireman, ex-bassist and founding member of Stellar Corpses. He had a significant influence on the punk and music scenes in Santa Cruz. It is important to remember that Lamothe possessed additional skills because he was a founding member of the band Stellar Corpses. Lamothe served as a former bassist and co-founder of the band under the name “Mothman,” and both the county and the band acknowledged that he was an important contributor to its creation. He served as an influence to numerous musicians. Paul “Wolfman” Grimm (they/them), who worked as a roadie for Stellar while they were on tour and played stand-up bass in Fulminante and other different ventures. Whether it was for his brief honky tonk combo, Oh Bears!, or for Stellar Corpses, Dan has a fantastic bass skills. He tried to imitate the music he heard while listening to his favourite rockabilly and psychobilly tunes. He was given the name Danimal just for that (and Caveman Dan for another, completely different one). You can tell he enjoyed what he did by listening to his recordings of songs like “Steel Butterfly” or “Valley of Madness,” but he also took the time to study and perfect his trade. It’s a feature that was evident in person because Dan always had a broad smile on stage when he was with his buddies.

He set an example for others with his admirable commitment to public service. To so many other people, Dan meant so many different things.

“Dan Lamothe was so nice and so hospitable to me when I toured through Santa Cruz, where the band I was with did shows with Stellar Corpses at The Catalyst as well as 924 Gilman St. He and Emilio put us up and made us eggs and pancakes, and I will never forget that kindness. It was also great to see him and the band again when they toured through the east coast and stopped off in Lodi to be on an EXTRA WACKY Rock and Roll Cooking with Sal Bee.
