How did Andreas Frey die?

Andreas Frey, who had just celebrated his 43rd birthday, reportedly died in his sleep, according to FREY Nutrition’s Facebook page.

The message reads,

It is with deep sorrow that we must announce that Andreas Frey, founder of FREY Nutrition, passed away on the night of October 20. on October 21st died suddenly in his sleep. Our sympathy goes out to his deceased, especially his wife Ina and his daughters Anna and Lisa. His wife Ina Frey, co-founder and right hand will now head the company. FREY Nutrition thus remains in the family’s hands and will carry on Andreas’ philosophy of “THE BEST OR NOTHING” in his sense.

Andreas Frey was one of the biggest athletes in Germany in the 2000s. After winning various international championships at NAC and NABBA as an amateur, the heavyweight bodybuilder competed at the PDI association. After his active time, the ex-professional stayed true to the sport as the operator of his own supplement line, with which he supported various competitions.

Who was Andreas Frey?

Andreas Frey was born on October 20th, 1979 in Romania, where he and his family lived until he was six years old. The later bodybuilder already attended a German school in Eastern Europe, so he later described the move to Germany primarily as a formality. Parts of his family were already living here at the time.

At the age of nine, the later professional found his way into fitness training for the first time, although he lost his motivation after just a few months. It was only a few years later that his brother convinced him that Andreas had good genetics for bodybuilding, so he gave weight training a second try. This time the latter giant stayed on the iron.

With a height of 183 cm, he already weighed 90 kilograms at that time. As an active professional, it should be up to 145 kilograms in the offseason.

PDI instead of IFBB

After Andreas Frey won his first international title as a junior, he was motivated to start with the men as well. From 2002 to 2004 he won the world championship at NABB and in 2005 he secured both the German championship and the Mr. Universe title at NAC.

In the pros, Andreas Frey decided against the IFBB and for the PDI. This had an extraordinary scoring system, which consisted of five equal parts:

1. Symmetry and aesthetics (four quarter turns in a group of up to 10 participants and in comparisons of 2 to 3 competitors)
2. Muscularity (seven mandatory poses will be performed by the competitors individually and in comparison to 2 to 4 competitors)
3. posing freestyle
4. entertainment value
5. Posedown (basic positions, compulsory poses, and free posing)

The PDI, about whom not much information can be found today, also included Paul Dillett, Sami Al-Haddad, and Lee Priest. It was the latter who won the Night of Champions 2006, where Andreas Frey came in second. Three more professional competitions followed before the German heavyweight bodybuilder ended his competitive career in 2008.

Andreas Frey cause of death

After his time as a competitor, Andreas Frey stayed true to the scene. He started his own supplement company and has acted as a sponsor and promoter of many weightlifting and bodybuilding competitions.

As has now been announced on the Frey Nutrition Facebook page, Andreas Frey passed away on the night of October 20th. to 21.10. suddenly in his sleep. The ex-pro leaves a wife and two daughters.

At the time this story was published, The cause of death has not been confirmed. But rumors around social media claimed that the bodybuilder died of an acute heart condition.
