New Delhi: Following a significant delay in student counselling for NEET PG admissions 2021, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said that the procedure will begin on January 12, 2022.
The announcement comes after the Supreme Court approved the resumption of medical counselling for NEET-PG admissions in 2021-22 and affirmed the legality of the OBC quota of 27%.
Several doctors who have been waiting for admission to postgraduate studies will be relieved by the start of the counselling procedure.
On Friday, a panel of justices DY Chandrachud and AS Bopanna issued an interim order, saying “there is an urgent need to initiate the process of counselling” after hearing the case for two days.
According to a PTI report, the bench stated, “Counselling on the basis of NEET-PG 2021 and NEET-UG 2021 shall be conducted by giving effect to the reservation as provided by the notice dated July 29, 2021, including the 27% reservation for the OBC (other backward class) category and 10% reservation for the EWS category in the AIQ (All India Quota) seats.”
The interim order was issued on a batch of petitions filed by doctors challenging a notice issued by the Centre and the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) on July 29, 2021, providing 27% reservation for OBCs and 10% for EWSs in the National Eligibility Cumulation Entrance Test (NEET-PG) admissions for medical courses for the academic year 2021-22.
The Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA), which had previously complained about the delay in initiating NEET-PG admission, is relieved by the Supreme Court’s judgment and Mansukh Mandaviya’s declaration. It has also petitioned the Supreme Court, claiming that the admission process must begin immediately.
It had stated that the NEET-PG selects roughly 45,000 candidates each year as postgraduate (PG) physicians and that delays in counselling had resulted in no younger doctors being enrolled in 2021.
According to FORDA, second and third-year PG doctors are dealing with patients and are dealing with an increased workload as a result of the Covid epidemic.
It called off its strike on December 31 after the administration promised to look into its requests.
