Tributes to David Garden

Many people expressed their profound sympathies to his family and expressed how much they loved him.

Journalist Carol Silva wrote: “I have often been asked if this is my husband. Sort of. This is Dave Garden. Dave was one of my work husbands for years. Dave was a beloved photographer at News 12 Long Island. Bright. Hard-working. With an incredible eye for what made the pictures look just right. Dave was your eyes, for the millions of you who saw Long Island in an even broader way every day. The first time I shot with Dave it was early morning, and the shadows were unkind. David said, “It’s time to warm you up.” With angles, filters, and a little extra work, Dave went out of his way to make sure I looked as good as the rest of the story he was shooting. This picture is from the summer Dave and I won an Emmy award for Long Island Passport. It was our summer series on stay-cation fun. We went horseback riding in Montauk, took the ferry to Fire Island, went fishing off Glen Cove, and Dave taught me that lobster rolls may be the best barometer of how good a summer restaurant truly is! Dave was like a Husband. Sometimes we frustrated each other. Even got mad. And he could get a little cranky. But ultimately Dave made me laugh. He was funny, a loyal friend and wanted to be loved. Dave, you are gone far too soon, and leave behind so many of us in your television family (especially Elizabeth, Elisa, Danielle, Shari, Eileen, Virginia, Christine, Andrew, Erin, Doug, Kevin, )and your other family who miss you and loved you. In fact, we still do. God bless you, Dave. And may you be resting in peace and happiness.”

Journalist Merdeith Garafalo wrote: “I am numb just reading this, absolutely heartbreaking. Dave was my first photographer when I moved to New York and one of my favorites. I loved working with him, he was always passionate for what he did, but also cared so much about his reporter to make sure we had everything we needed for the perfect piece. He was excellent with his work & paid such attention to detail… he was so talented. I won my first journalism award with him for a science piece and I am forever grateful. I will never forget my first reporting story and not knowing many people at the station yet we connected immediately sharing good laughs and conversation about how we loved what we did. He was the kind of photographer that you would request if you can get and every single time I saw him at work he would say hello and I would have to stop and chat with him about something. Even after I left the station, we stayed in touch and he checked in to see how things were going. Dave was a true ray of sunshine in what can sometimes could be a very cloudy business. The world is a better place because of Dave, and I know so many will grieve his loss to the business and our lives. Rest in peace, you will be truly missed ❤️‍🩹☀️
