Keep reading to know more about Rick Froberg and his cause of death in detail.
Who was Rick Froberg?
American musician and visual artist Eric “Rick” Froberg also went by the aliases Rick Fork and Rick Farr. He was raised in Brooklyn and Encinitas, California, and was born in Los Angeles.
He performed with fellow San Diego musician John Reis in the bands Pitchfork, Drive Like Jehu, and Hot Snakes during his musical career as their singer and guitarist. Froberg also collaborated with the Obits, Thingy, and the Last of the Juanitas.
For all of his bands, as well as for Rocket from the Crypt and Reis’ Swami Records label, he developed album art, promotional artwork, and product designs during the course of his career as a visual artist and illustrator.
Drive Like Jehu was signed to the major label Interscope Records in the early 1990s as a package deal that also included Reis’ more popular Rocket from the Crypt. Drive As Jehu specialized in a style of loud, ambitious indie rock that was a major influence on bands like Modest Mouse and At the Drive-In.
However, the group was only one of many that Froberg collaborated with throughout a career that spanned three decades. Before Drive Like Jehu, he and Reis were members of Pitchfork, whose 1990 album “Eucalyptus” is regarded as a classic in the post-hardcore genre.
Froberg’s notion that piercing loudness and appealing choruses could coexist in any band led to the formation of each of them. As a vocalist, he developed a style of frantic yelp that conveyed both emotion and hatred.
Drive Like Jehu released their self-titled debut in 1991, and “Yank Crime,” their second LP and first for Interscope, came out in 1994, three years after Nirvana’s big hit “Nevermind” unleashed a feeding frenzy for gritty bands with loyal local fan bases.
Mark Trombino, the band’s drummer, went on to produce popular songs by Jimmy Eat World and Blink-182, and he also founded Donut Friend, a popular L.A. doughnut restaurant with delicacies with the names of post-punk bands like Fugazi and Hüsker Dü.
Drive Like Jehu came back together in 2014 for a concert at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park in San Diego. They also headlined festivals like Coachella. Hot Snakes issued four studio albums between 2000 and 2018; Obits’ most recent album, “Die at the Zoo,” was released in 2021.

I was blown away and they quickly became one of my favorite bands. I was already a huge Drive like Jehu fan, so it wasn’t a stretch. We became reacquainted when Jehu played at the Showbox a few years back and spent the night drinking at the alibi room across the street. I ran into him in Brooklyn a couple years ago, and We drank whiskey until five in the morning when the bar closed. He was also one of my favorite artists, and we spent the time talking about guitars and art. When the sun came up. We said our goodbyes with about 1000 hugs, And he promised to hit me up next time they came through Olympia. The news of his passing hits like a ton of bricks. Rest easy, man. See you on the flipside.“
