Toombon cliff crash: Following a collision on Saturday in Victoria’s east, a woman has passed away.

At Toombon, in Victoria’s east, a woman passed away when the vehicle she was operating skidded off a cliff and into a creek. Police urged Victorians to drive with precaution behind the wheel over this extended public holiday weekend as the number of fatalities on Victorian roads increased to 143 in 2023 compared to the previous year. Toombon cliff crash: What happened?

A woman died in a horrific car accident in Toombon, Victoria’s east, when the car she was driving went off a cliff and into a creek.

Police said that car was going along Donnellys Creek Road when it went off the road and into a creek around 10:20 am.

Two people in the car, a female youngster and a man who was possibly in his 20s, were taken to the hospital with minor injuries and are now in a stable condition.

The car abruptly veered off Donnellys Creek Road while it was moving down it, careening off a cliff before coming to rest in a creek nearby. The driver was sadly unable to be saved, despite the quick response of emergency personnel and police enforcement.

Investigation and Formal Identification:

Investigations into the deadly collision that injured a guy in his 20s and a teenage girl and claimed the life of a woman are still ongoing.

The car’s female driver, who passed away at the site, has not yet been formally identified.

Aerial photographs show the automobile, which appears to be a 4WD, in the river near the cliff’s foot.

The circumstances that caused the automobile to drive off the cliff are currently being looked into by the authorities.

At this point, it is unclear what caused the collision. Official identification of the driver has not yet been made by the police, and additional information will be disclosed as the inquiry develops and more information becomes available.

Another accident case:

An 18-year-old driver who drove down a cliff in Mirimbah, close to Mount Buller, just before 11 p.m. on Friday had a lucky escape.

Authorities claim that a guy from Warrnambool was travelling along Mount Buller Road in a Holden Trailblazer when it veered off the road and fell three meters into some nearby vegetation. The car began to tumble down the mountain before hitting some trees and coming to a stop. The driver was rescued from the car uninjured.

Police, SES, CFA, Fire Rescue Victoria, paramedics, and a nearby towing business all worked together in a massive operation to recover the automobile and rescue the youngster. Paramedics examined him at the spot, but he had no physical wounds.

‘Operation Regal’: Victorian road death toll

Police around the state will step up enforcement as part of Operation Regal, which will begin on June 9, 2023, to reduce traffic injuries.

It comes after a dreadful stretch of times on Victorian roads, with five fatalities in the first week of June and 29 fatalities in May, more than double the number in the same month last year. 140 lives have now been lost on Victorian roads in 2023, a 35% increase from the same period last year. The last time 140 fatalities were reported at this stage of the year was in 2007 when 143 people died.

This year, there have been 111 single-vehicle fatalities, eight double-vehicle fatalities, two quadruple-vehicle fatalities, and one quintuple-vehicle fatality, as compared to 101 single-vehicle fatalities and just one double-vehicle fatality at this time last year.

Police warned motorists to drive with caution for the long weekend in advance, pointing out that the state had experienced its worst year-to-date road toll since 2007.

Martin O’Brien, acting assistant commissioner of road policing, urged Victorians to drive with caution during this long public holiday weekend.

‘Whether you’re travelling across the state this weekend or heading to the alpine regions, please take extra care on the roads and be sure to drive to the conditions,’ 

‘Everyone has a responsibility on the road, and everyone must make safety their number one priority when getting behind the wheel.’

The number of passenger deaths surged by 255% to 32 from nine at this time last year due to the spike in multiple fatality crashes, while the number of driver fatalities rose by 56% to 69 from 44.

The police believe several factors, including excessive or inappropriate speed, drunk driving, seatbelt non-compliance, distraction, disobeying traffic signs, and unauthorized driving, which includes being suspended, disqualified, or unlicensed, are to blame for this year’s fatal collisions.

During Operation Regal the previous year, police issued more than 5000 infractions, of which more than 40% were issued to drivers who were caught speeding and 372 were issued for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Operation Regal will run from Friday, June 9 at 12:01 a.m. until Monday, June 12, 2023, at 23:59 p.m.
