Actress Camilla Ah Kin from Here Comes the Habibs has passed away after a protracted illness. This past weekend, the Media, Entertainment, and Arts Alliance (MEAA) officially confirmed her passing on Twitter.

It is with a heavy heart that we have to share the news that Camilla Ah Kin passed away in Sydney last night aged 58 after a lengthy battle with illness. Camilla was an an activist for and within the performer community for 30 years for which she was awarded a MEAA Gold Honour Badge earlier this year.
During her career in the performing arts, she was a a director, teacher, mentor, panellist, policy innovator and a highly-skilled actor, much admired by her peers. Camilla served variously as an NSW Branch committee member, long term Equity delegate to Federal Council and NPC member, on staff as NSW Equity organiser for several years, and latterly, a member of our Board.
With kindness and tough love, she held her #MEAAequity family accountable.
Who was Camilla Ah Kin?
Australian actress Camilla Ah Kin is best known for her roles in the television series Holding the Man, Ali & the Ball, Going Home, and most recently, Channel 9 Comedy’s Here Come the Habibs.
The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts is where Ah Kin received her education. She performs in theatre, movies, and television.
She was awarded a cultural scholarship by the French government in 1992 so that she may attend the Jacques Lecoq International School of Theatre in Paris.
Additionally, she earned a Master of Arts (Research) from the University of Sydney’s Department of Performance Studies.
Ah, Kin has made appearances in plays for organizations such as Bell Shakespeare, Belvoir, Sydney Theatre Company, Melbourne Theatre Company, WA Theatre Company (Black Swan), Ensemble Theatre, and Gryphon.
She has also had positions as a dramaturg, director, and instructor. She appeared in the 2015 release of the Australian romantic drama Holding the Man. Ah, Kin was selected to play Mariam Habib in a pivotal role on Here Come the Habibs in 2016.

It is with a heavy heart that we have to share the news that Camilla Ah Kin passed away in Sydney last night aged 58 after a lengthy battle with illness.
Two of Camilla’s friends, Tim McGarry and Mark Paxton, are quoted in the following statement that discloses her cause of death.
Vale Camilla 1964 – 2023. At 8 pm last night (at curtain call) our precious and fearless friend, Camilla Ah Kin, slipped away peacefully at the Sacred Heart Hospice Darlinghurst, after a valiant fight against stage four cancer.
It was her wish to leave this world quietly, and she has. Our feisty, spirited, adventurous, big-hearted Camille, with her radiant, gentle smile, is free.
To the extraordinary team at the Sacred Heart Hospice, we offer our endless, boundless gratitude for all the care and compassion you gave our friend. Our love and condolences to all her family and many close friends who treasured her friendship so dearly.
“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel”. (At Camilla’s request, there will be no funeral but a memorial in the coming weeks).
Outpouring Tributes and condolences on social media
Camilla’s former “Here Comes the Habibs” co-star Rob Shehadie also shared his tribute on Twitter.
“Rest in Peace Camilla,” he wrote, alongside a photo of the couple together on the red carpet. “Australia fell in love with you as Miriam in Here Comes the Habibs. You will be missed,” he wrote.

Camilla inspired me because she was at university despite her nationality and female gender. Which I’m sure discouraged her to be involved in higher studies.
