I will be forever grateful for the modeling, support, and love I received. Mr. Pritchett was an institution that will reap harvests for generations to come.”

Who was Maurice Pritchett?
Pritchett, a 1965 Delaware State graduate, excelled in basketball with the Hornets from 1961 to 1965 while playing for famed head coach Bennie George. Pritchett, who is regarded as one of the best defenders in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), led the Hornets in rebounding in each of his first two seasons with the club and led the squad as a senior.
He was a 1961 Wilmington Howard High School All-City pick before enrolling at Delaware State. Pritchett returned to Wilmington, Delaware after receiving his degree to play for Peoples Settlement in the Metropolitan League.
He led the after-school youth and leisure programs in the neighborhood for 30 years while serving as principal at Wilmington’s Bancroft Middle School, where he had an impact on thousands of students and teachers.
Along with coaching girls’ basketball for the Wilmington Athletic Association, which was started by fellow Delaware State alum Major Hairston, he also ran a kid’s basketball league that offered educational opportunities, field excursions and other enrichment activities.
Pritchett acted as a spokesperson for Delaware State University, encouraging many people to enroll there and achieve their academic and professional goals.
In 1995, he was given an induction into the Delaware State Athletics Hall of Fame. In 2021, he was inducted into the Delaware Basketball Hall of Fame.
Maurice Pritchett was more than simply a principal to many people—he was also their friend, boss, and mentor. He previously served as the elementary school’s principal in Bancroft. Throughout his life, he was seen to have had a significant effect on the lives of many people.

He was the ipitomy of a dedicated civic leader,and he will truely be missed.”
