Oklahoma Shooting: Explained
According to Midwest City, Oklahoma’s police chief, a suspect has been apprehended in connection with a shooting at Rose State College that left one person dead. Reporters were told by Chief Sid Porter that the victim and suspect “are acquainted through a domestic situation.”
Authorities said that when the suspect’s wife and the victim, a 20-year-old male student, was leaving the school’s humanities building, the suspect approached them and started shooting.
Officers tasked with patrolling the school had heard allegations of a person being shot; they went to the scene and discovered the suspect, Porter said.
Suspect Surrendered
According to a police press release, witnesses were able to positively identify the shooter, who put his “gun into a backpack” after opening fire. When cops met him, the suspect, according to the authorities, “got down on his knees, raised his hands, and stated he surrendered.”

According to online documents, the suspect is being detained in the Oklahoma County jail and is charged with first-degree murder.
It’s unknown if he has legal representation. Porter praised the “fantastic job” that the staff and students at the community college east of Oklahoma City did in responding to the situation.
He claimed that a practice active shooter simulation took place on campus recently. According to its website, Rose State College is a public, two-year institution. It offers more than 60 academic programs and more than 13,000 students.
Rose State College’s statement
Earlier today, Rose State College posted on Twitter that there was an active shooter incident on campus.
“Please take cover where you are and heed any orders given by police enforcement. More details will be provided when they become available. Later, the lockdown was removed.
“Please avoid the area south of Humanities and Administration Building. All activities and classes for the remainder of Monday, April 24 are cancelled,” a tweet from the college said.
The campus will also be closed Tuesday, the school said, adding in a subsequent tweet it is working to provide counseling services for people who need it.
Please keep Long’s family in your prayers. Our deepest condolences will go to Long’s family and friends during this difficult time.
