On Tuesday, April 18, 2023, it was announced that American actor Ben Lipitz, who was most remembered for his Broadway performances in Disney’s The Lion King, has passed away.
Although he performed on stages all around the US and Canada, he always considered the Walnut to be his artistic home. When he was barely 18 years old, he began working here. Ben possessed an unmatched talent as an artist.
Ben’s laughter and sense of humor will never be forgotten. His beloved friends and family, especially his wife Rosalie, son Matthew, and daughter Michaela, are in our thoughts and prayers.

Mr. Lipitz, an American actor best known for his Broadway performance in Disney’s The Lion King, has twice worked with renowned director Sidney Lumet. Ben Lipitz has played the hysterically humorous, utterly adorable, scene-stealing Pumbaa in Disney’s The Lion King for almost 19 years on Broadway and on tour.
He currently resides just outside of New York City. Musicals like “Just So,” “Red Hot and Blue,” and “The Producers,” as well as plays like “Art,” “God of Carnage,” “Laughter on the 23rd Floor,” and “Death of a Salesman,” produced in 2021, are just a few of the regional theatre productions to which they have contributed.
Ben Lipitz is an experienced stage actor who has been appearing on Broadway for almost 40 years. During his career as a concert producer, he organized and produced over one hundred charity concert events, including those for The Actors Fund, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, and The Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey.

Ben had a real zest for life, laughter, theatre, family & friends. He was proud of his theatrical success but beyond proud of his wife Rosalie and his beautiful kids. Our heart is out to Rosalie, his children his family, and all his loved ones. His life was a blessing to all and his memory is already a blessing.
He was surrounded by loved ones who will continue to honor his legacy by living their lives to the fullest. Funeral arrangements and services will be announced later by his family members and we will update the details soon.
