Who was Crystal Woods?

Crystal Woods was raised by her adored mother “Juanita Cherry,” a single mother of four children, who was born on April 15th, 1958 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

After graduating from high school in 1977, Crystal began going by the nickname “Crystal Woods”. When questioned about her time in high school, she replied,

“I hear all these stories about kids being bullied in high school but I was fortunate enough to not have had that experience. I think that not being bullied was very important in helping me discover myself and learning to love myself. I think everyone deserves to have a bully free environment.”

A talent scout for Lou Paciocco’s well-known “La Cage” performance in Ft. Lauderdale would discover Crystal Woods in 1984. Inspired by the 1973 French drama of the same name by Jean Poiret, Lou Paciocco built a restaurant nightclub named “La Cage Aux Folles” in New York in November 1980.

The play was about a homosexual pair, Georges and Albin, the main attraction and romantic companion of Georges, who ran a drag nightclub in St. Tropez. In 1978, the play would be made into a French-Italian movie of the same name, and in 1996, “The Birdcage,” starring Nathan Lane and Robin Williams, would become a great modern American cinema picture. With the limitless ability and imagination of Mr. Paciocco, this imagined St. Tropez nightclub would come to reality. Many superstars, including Ethel Merman and Rock Hudson, attended the “La Cage Aux Folles” imitation revue and nightclub, which became an instant phenomenon.

On April 18, 1981, Lou would then debut “La Cage Aux Folles” in Hollywood, followed by the debut of “La Cage” in Atlantic City in 1982. The musical “La Cage Aux Folles” was first presented on Broadway in 1983 and went on to win six Tony Awards. An Evening at La Cage, starring Frank Marino will premiere in Ft. Lauderdale in 1984 under the direction of Lou Paciocco at the Sunrise Musical Theatre, which also included Crystal Woods in the cast. The only original cast member to be at Frank Marino’s side from the beginning was Crystal Woods.

Frank Marino had the opportunity to take the show to Las Vegas for a six-week engagement at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in 1985. According to Crystal’s memory of Frank Marino,

“Crystal… It’s only for six weeks and you can put on your resume that you worked in Las Vegas.” Crystal laughed wholeheartedly, “and now we’ve been doing this for 29 years.”
