What happened to Julian Becerra?
Officer Julian Becerra died Saturday night, according to the Fountain Police Department, nine days after he was injured while attempting to detain three suspects outside of Pueblo.
The Fountain Police Department shared the devastating news on Facebook.
It read,
“It is with extreme sadness that we at the Fountain Police Department notify the public that K-9 Officer Julian Becerra has succumbed to the injuries he suffered during an on-duty incident that occurred on February 2, 2023. We appreciate the public’s outpouring of support over the past week for Officer Becerra, his family and the Fountain Police Department.
This is an evolving process, and the family is requesting privacy while they navigate the difficult task of planning for Julian’s final rest. The family has elected to not make any public statements at this time.”
Tonight, law enforcement officers from across the state are gathered at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs to express their condolences and support. There will appear to be a procession of law enforcement tonight, around 10 p.m., though we have no confirmation of a route or destination.
Motorcycle officers from the Colorado Springs Police Department were seen arriving at the hospital as an expected escort.
EPC Sheriff’s Office wrote a tribute,
“The men and women of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office grieve with our brothers and sisters of the Fountain Police Department at the tragic loss of Officer Julian Becerra. Officer Becerra honorably served as a Detention Specialist at EPSO in 2014 before becoming a Deputy Sheriff in 2016. To our blue family, take care of each other as we keep Officer Becerra’s family in our thoughts and prayers.”
Tragic death:
Becerra was one of the Fountain PD officers who helped the Department of Corrections Patrol Unit on February 2 find Pueblo carjacking suspects. There were active arrest warrants for two of the three accused. The car was seen on southbound I-25 heading towards Fountain at around 7:30. Until they were spotted at Loves Travel Plaza on Mesa Ridge Highway, the criminals led police on a chase up and down I-25. Before the suspects got back on the road and the chase continued on northbound I-25, officers observed the suspects attempting to steal another vehicle near Loves.
According to the woman who was pumping gas when her car was almost stolen at that moment, her husband was inside the store. When the suspect’s car left South Academy, a tyre deflation device rendered it partially immobile. The driver got out of the car after it had stopped and fled on foot from the police. Officer Becerra was involved in the pursuit when he went over the bridge and landed 40 feet below. Then, Officer Becerra was flown to the hospital. Becerra’s collapse was not fully explained by Fountain Police.
Officer Becerra was reportedly on life support at Penrose Hospital on Friday, surrounded by family and friends.
Commander Mark Cristiani said the day after the incident,
“Whether it was a fall or trip, a push, a slip, we really don’t know. We’re reviewing all the evidence that we have at the moment.”
Officers caught the car’s driver as he tried to jump off the bridge before he crashed. According to the police, the guy kept saying, “let me go. I want to die.” The three suspects have been identified as Pueblo residents Devon Bobian, age 31, Danisha Pacheco, age 28, and Anthony Vallejos, age 37. In addition to several outstanding felony warrants, Devon Bobian and Anthony Vallejos were detained on various criminal offences associated with the pursuit. In connection with the chase, Danisha Pacheco was taken into custody on numerous felony charges.

More than $52,000 has been donated to Becerra’s GoFundMe page in the last week, and it is still accepting contributions. The GoFundMe page states that Becerra was an Air Force veteran with a wife and two children.
