Chimenti, 69 years old, famous for his South American dribbling nicknamed the ‘bicycle’ boasted 77 appearances and 13 goals in Serie A and linked his best years to the jerseys of Pistoiese, Catanzaro, Palermo, Taranto, Salernitana, and Lecco.
Who was Vito Chimenti ?
Chimenti was born in Bari in 1953, he played in Serie A, B, and C with Pistoiese, Catanzaro, Palermo (29 goals in two seasons), Taranto, Salernitana, and Lecco. After becoming a coach, he was part of the technical staff of Salernitana, Foggia, Messina, Matera, Lanciano, Rimini, and Virtus Casarano.
Chimenti was known for his ‘bicycle’, a type of dribbling with which the former striker dribbled past opponents who tried to stop him from running towards the opponent’s goal.
Chimenti lifted the ball with his heel and sent it over his head, to then find it in front of his body. An unprecedented play for those years, today particularly loved by champions of the caliber of Neymar and Douglas Costa.
He scored for Juve in the 1979 Coppa Italia final. His technical prowess and agility, in spite of a squat build, attracted the attention of Palermo who bought him in ’77
