Don Newkirk, a musician, apparently passed away last week, however no cause of death has been disclosed.  On Friday, November 25, Rahiem of the Furious Five posted on Facebook to announce his passing. The statement reads,

“It is with a heavy heart I announce the transitioning of my brother Don Newkirk,” he wrote. “Fifty-six years young. Don Newkirk was among the first R&B artists signed to Def Jam records. My condolences go out to his family. S.I.P bro.” He later told AllHipHop, “One of our close friends called me and told me that Don’s daughter called him and told him.”

Newkirk was well-known for his voice-overs on albums such as De La Soul’s 3 Feet High and Rising and the 3rd Bass’ song “The Gas Face” from The Cactus Album, released in 1989.

Donald Newkirk cause of death was not known yet. Don Newkirk’s music and voice were heard on influential Hip-Hop tracks like Stetsasonic, 3rd Bass, De La Soul, and Prince Paul’s solo albums.

BROOKZILL! and Baby Elephant were two of the organisations he and Paul co-founded. The artist, who was born in the Bronx and raised on Long Island, New York, has died. Paul affirmed the demise of Don Newkirk.

Those who have publicly lamented the man include Questlove, Chuck D, Dante Ross, R.A. The Rugged Man, Open Mike Eagle, and BROOKZILL! bandmate Rodrigo Brando.  There have been no other information about Don Newkirk’s death.

Donald Newkirk was an American musician, composer, and record producer born in 1965. His voice-overs on albums such as De La Soul’s Three Feet High and Rising and the 3rd Bass’ song “The Gas Face” are etched in the hip hop music community’s collective subconscious.

As a musician, Newkirk has contributed to a number of hip-hop songs, such as the De La Soul remix of “Say No Go,” but his most notable work is the groovy baseline, lead horn line, and keyboards on Stetsasonic’s “Talking All That Jazz.”

Funk City, Newkirk’s debut solo album, was released in October 1989. Russell Simmons OBR/Columbia Records handled the release. It also included “I Desire” and “Sweat” tracks on this album.

He released a solo album titled Funk City at the same period on OBR/Columbia Records, a division of Def Jam Records.
