Marshall Ervin, Jr. and Jonathan Koleski, two Cobb County Sheriff’s Deputies, were slain on Thursday at a residence in the Marietta neighborhood while apprehending a suspect wanted for larceny, according to the sheriff’s office.
Christopher Cook and Christopher Golden, the accused, were apprehended after a standoff with law enforcement that lasted over four hours. Golden was charged with two charges of aggravated assault on an officer and murder, while Cook was charged with the alleged theft. Owens said the deputies knocked on the door and rang the doorbell but no one answered. As the deputies were returning to their patrol car, a vehicle drove up and someone from inside the vehicle opened fire on them. It is unclear if both suspects were in the vehicle when the shooting began. The sheriff said the deputies were able to alert dispatchers of the shooting. A standoff between the suspects and law enforcement ensued, and Cook and Golden were eventually taken into custody.
Who were the Cobb County deputies?
Koleski, according to Owens, joined the sheriff’s office in 2007 and is 42 years old. In 2012, Ervin Jr., a 38-year-old father of two, joined the sheriff’s department. The sheriff described them as “great individuals, men of character and integrity, family members, adored by their family and kids.” According to Owens, he spoke to the wives of both deputies. They are devastated, just like we all are, added Owens.
