Trained at the Hochschule für Musik in Hanover, Lars Vogt came to public attention when he won 2nd prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition in 1990, opening the doors to an international concert career. He has performed on the most prestigious stages with first-rate formations: the Orchester de Paris, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Staatskapelle of Dresden, the Vienna Philharmonic, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonic of New York, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, or the NHK Symphony Orchestra of Tokyo. With some of them, he has forged special ties. He was thus the first pianist in residence during the 2003/04 season with the Berlin Philharmonic.
“Technology alone solves nothing”
During his long concert career, he has been conducted by more than 200 conductors, including Claudio Abbado, Daniel Harding, Mariss Jansons, Paavo Järvi, Andris Nelsons and Sir Simon Rattle. He often cited them as models when he started conducting: “I love watching other conductors. First there is the technique, but that still remains a mystery” . he said in an interview : “What remains mysterious is that technique alone solves nothing. Deciding when the orchestra needs help, inspiration. It’s like a moving train, when it is launched you have to know how to withdraw, which is what great leaders know how to do.
From the piano or the pulpit, he has conducted many orchestras including the Camerata Salzburg, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie of Bremen, the Warsaw Philharmonic and the symphony orchestras of Sydney, Singapore and New Zealand. He also distinguished himself during the very remarkable tour, in Germany and France, at the head of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra .
In 2015 he took over the reins of the Royal Northern Sinfonia (RNS), his first official position as band music director. Together, they enchanted audiences in Amsterdam, Vienna, Budapest or Istanbul, and performed at numerous festivals in France and Germany. Currently principal artistic partner of this orchestra, Lars Vogt was also musical director of the Orchester de chambre de Paris, and collaborated with the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslauter, both as a conductor and as a pianist, and as an artist in residence.
At the head of the Paris Chamber Orchestra
Since 2020, he has been musical director of the Orchester de chambre de Paris. “When I play the piano, I have the impression of conducting an orchestra, in a way. I play with my fingers, but in my head there is a conductor” , he confided. “I aspire to obtain the sound of a violin, a flute, an oboe, a bassoon, colors that are not only the colors of a piano.”
A sought-after chamber musician, he has often performed with his longtime accomplices, Christian and Tanja Tetzlaff, Thomas Quasthoff, Ian Bostridge, Julian Pregardian, and has collaborated with actors Klaus-Maria Brandauer and Konrad Beikircher on literary and stage projects . Lars Vogt was the founder of the chamber music festival Spannungen , located in an unusual industrial location in the Cologne region. Very concerned with mediation with young people, he had launched a program called Rhapsody in School , which connects great classical musicians and schoolchildren. He taught piano at the Hanover Conservatory.
Its rich repertoire, abundantly engraved on disc, includes works by Bach, Mozart and Beethoven, the great romantics such as Schumann, Brahms, Grieg, Tchaikovsky or Rachmaninoff, but also more recent works, from the 20th century until today. He collaborates with leading contemporary composers and premieres the works of Thomas Larcher, Erkki-Sven Tüür, Kryštof Mařatka and Volker David Kirchner.
He advocated a sincere interpretation, and an open report to his audience. It is for this reason that when his illness was announced, he insisted on talking about it openly , as well as the consequences it had on his perception of the world. Beating to the end, he continued to conduct and perform, emphasizing the importance of music in his fight against cancer: “Music can console. I play a lot of Bach for myself. music with friends, working together on the music we love, we forget everything” , he said at the microphone of Jean-Baptiste Urbain in September 2021.
