Thomas Murphy’s Personal Life
Murphy was born on May 31, 1925, in Brooklyn, New York. He earned a B.S. from Cornell University in 1945 and an M.B.A. from Harvard University in 1949. He worked for Kenyon & Eckhardt and Lever Brothers after serving in the US Navy from 1943 to 1946.
Suzanne Crosby Murphy was Thomas Murphy’s wife. Suzanne Murphy passed away in the year 2009. They had three daughters together. Thomas Murphy had three daughters, Emilie Murphy, Kathleen Murphy, and Mary Murphy, and one son, Colin Murphy, with his wife Suzanne Murphy.
Thomas’s Career
Hudson Valley and Durham Television Enterprises, the proprietors of WTVD in Durham, North Carolina, joined in December 1957 to become Capital Cities Television Corporation, which later became Capital Cities Broadcasting Corp. in 1960 and Capital Cities Communications in 1973.
He became the first Vice President of Capital Cities in 1960. In 1964, he was named President, and Smith was named the company’s first Chairman. Smith died unexpectedly in 1966, and Murphy took over as Chairman and CEO.
Murphy orchestrated the $3.5 billion acquisition of the American Broadcasting Company in 1986 with fellow Capital Cities executive Daniel Burke.
Murphy and Burke are recognized for enhancing ABC’s profitability and efficiency while serving as President and Chief Executive until 1994.
Disney purchased Capital Cities / ABC in 1995. Berkshire Hathaway, General Housewares Corp., Texaco, Inc., Johnson & Johnson, and IBM Corporation all had him on their boards of directors, and he was also a Life Trustee and Honorary Vice Chair of New York University.
