Vilas Craig, a Wisconsin native from Richland County, began singing and playing the guitar at a young age. He started a group named The Kollege Kings in 1957. One of the first bands to perform Rock ‘n’ Roll in Wisconsin was The Kollege Kings.
The two original songs “Spring Fever” and “My One My Only Love” were recorded and issued by them on a 45 rpm record in 1959. Vilas Craig & The ViCounts became the band’s new name in 1960, and they put out several further records.
The Kollege Kings and the Vicounts were considered “rockabilly” in the manner of Buddy Holly, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, and Elvis Presley, all of whom had songs that were successful on both the country and mainstream music charts. Holly’s voice might be heard in Craig’s voice on Kollege Kings and Vicounts recordings. He also qualifies as a factor, Ricky Nelson.

The group had previous encounters with musicians from the 1960s. The Vicounts once accompanied Bobby Darin at a concert in Madison and Jackie DeShannon and Bobby Goldsboro at events in Rockford, Illinois. Additionally, they performed with The Rivieras, a one-hit wonder band, at the Grant County Fairgrounds in Lancaster, as well as Gene Pitney at a concert hosted by the men’s basketball team at UW-Platteville. Additionally, they participated in a cerebral palsy telethon that WISC-TV in Madison broadcast.
Under the name The Six Shooters, the group also issued other singles such as “Don’t You Just Know It” and “Rotation.” Later singles “Unlucky Am I”, “Summers Over” and “Looking for a Girl” were recorded in Nashville with Billy Grammer, Hargus Melvin “Pig” Robbins and other studio session musicians.
In 2022, the brand-new singles “Four Boys of Bethlehem” and “It’s All About the Baby” were released.
