Who was Sergio Gori?
Italian football player Sergio “Bobo” Gori was a striker and a midfielder. Gori, a Milan native, made his Internazionale debut at a fairly young age, earning 10 caps between 1964 and 1966, when the Grande Inter squad of the 1960s was in play. In exchange for Luis Vinicio, the reigning Serie A leading scorer, he was traded to Lanerossi Vicenza to acquire experience for two seasons in 1966.
After making a name for himself with Vicenza, he spent a season returning to Inter in 1968. Nevertheless, he was then sent to Cagliari Calcio in exchange for Roberto Boninsegna, along with Angelo Domenghini. He won the Serie A championships in 1964–1965 and 1965–1966 with Inter, as well as the European Cup in 1964–1965 and the Intercontinental Cup in 1965.
He was an important starter for the Cagliari formation that won the first and only scudetto in the team’s history during the 1969–70 Serie A season. He and Gigi Riva formed an experimental offensive partnership, with him frequently serving as Riva’s backup striker. He was called up to represent his country at the 1970 World Cup because to his performances throughout that season. Gori went to Juventus in 1975, where he lasted two seasons and won the UEFA Cup and his fourth Scudetto during the 1976–1977 campaign.
He finished his Serie A career with Hellas Verona F.C. in the 1977–1978 campaign, and his career ultimately came to an end in 1979 following a season with Sant’Angelo in Serie C2, when he assisted the team in being promoted to Serie C1. In addition to Giovanni Ferrari, Pietro Fanna, Aldo Serena, and Attilio Lombardo, he is one of only five footballers who have won the Serie A with three different teams: Inter, Cagliari, and Juventus.
At the 1970 FIFA World Cup, Gori replaced Domenghini in the quarterfinal encounter against the hosts, Mexico, and made his international debut for Italy. Italy went on to win the tournament. Following the World Cup in 1970, he had two more appearances for the Italian national team.
