Who was Dr. Linda Garand?

Linda Garand, PhD, RN, GCNS-BC, an associate professor in the School of Nursing, has degrees in nursing from the Universities of Iowa and Pittsburgh, as well as a post-doctoral fellowship in geriatric psychiatry. Dr. Garand received a lot of national attention for her contributions to the field of geropsychiatric nursing. She published a lot of writing and presented her findings at scientific meetings and international consortiums.

Her effectiveness as a teacher received consistently high marks from peers and students. She conducted a randomized clinical trial (RCT) of a preventive, problem-solving training (PST)-based mental health intervention with family carers of people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI, a precursor to some forms of dementia) or early dementia with funding from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), after which she described the nature and extent of psychiatric morbidity and burden among spouses of people with MCI (MCI, a precursor to some forms of dementia).

Caregivers who received the PST intervention reported significantly lower levels of load and depression over a one-year follow-up period than those who received the comparison intervention. The United States Department of Defense also presented Dr. Garand with a Peer Approved Alzheimer’s Research Program Award through the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs.
