On March 5, 2023, veteran radio personality Mark Pilgrim passed away. On social media, several of Pilgrim’s professional colleagues have confirmed the news of his passing, including radio broadcaster and former “Idol’s SA” judge Gareth Cliff.

It was with great sadness that I share this news.

Our hero and brother and much loved radio personality Mark Pilgrim lost his battle with cancer this morning at 10:45.

He fought valiantly to the very end.

Mark passed peacefully with his fiancé Adrienne at home. They were together for his last breath.

The family thank you for being part of his journey. For loving him and for celebrating him and supporting him always.

Mark will be greatly missed by all.

May his soul rest in peace.

Mark Pilgrim Cause of death

We’re sorry to have to inform you that Mark Pilgrim has passed away. Mark Pilgrim was regarded as having a friendly personality. Many people must be curious to know the Mark Pilgrim cause of death in light of the recent news. Mark received a stage 3 testicular cancer diagnosis in 1988. His kidneys and lungs were also affected by this severe kind of cancer. He was deemed to be in remission after receiving chemotherapy for nine months. Pilgrim experienced a sudden and serious heart attack on July 14, 2008, in his doctor’s office. Although having sustained severe cardiac damage (10% of his heart no longer functions), prompt medical attention saved his life.

“I’m not Chuck Norris. Yes, I am scared. I am also strong. Both emotions run parallel with each other. I’m under the care of incredible doctors and surrounded by love. This is my story. And there’s more chapters to come.”

From that point on, he documented his adventure, including his fight with Covid-19, his surgical recoveries, and his time with family. In an effort to maximize his remaining time, he asked the proposal to his partner Adrianne Watkins at the beginning of the year. Since the beginning of his fight with cancer, Watkins had never left his side.

In order to overcome the odds and regain his health, he had been on a multidisciplinary journey during the last three months. Unfortunately, Mark Pilgrim passed away after a long battle with cancer.

Who was Mark Pilgrim?

Mark Pilgrim was a South African media personality. In the 1980s, Voice of Wits campus radio was where Mark Pilgrim began his radio career. In 1995, he started working at 5FM. He quit 5fm in 2003 and started working at Johannesburg’s 94.7 Highveld Stereo. In October 2007, Pilgrim served as the host of a chart program that was simultaneously broadcast on two radio stations (KFM and 94.7). At the end of June 2014, he announced his retirement from radio. A few months later, he returned on Johannesburg’s brand-new Hot 91.9FM, starting hosting a Saturday morning show from 9 am to noon before returning full-time to host shows from Monday through Friday from 9 am to noon. He received the Liberty Radio Award for the Best Daytime Program in South Africa in 2019 after winning the MTN Radio Award for the Best Weekend Radio Show in South Africa in 2015. In recognition of his contributions to the radio industry, Mark was inducted into the South African Radio Awards Hall of Fame in 2021.

He has frequently played as a DJ at business gatherings and clubs across the nation. Pilgrim has logged many hours as a voice actor narrating radio and television commercials in post-production studios. Mark has served as the MC for several business gala events. He also gives motivational speeches in which he discusses how he battled testicular cancer and how it inspired him to pursue his objectives.

Pilgrim got a B.Com. in Industrial Psychology and Business Economics before entering the entertainment sector, and he worked for nine years as a quantitative consumer researcher. Market Research Africa was his first stop, followed by Research International and Kauffman Levine. Also, he served as the South African Market Research Association’s Johannesburg Chairman (SAMRA).
