M25 Dartford Crossing closed: What happened? When will the bridge be opened?

M25 Dartford Crossing shut down as protesters scale the bridge. Let’s see why M25 Dartford Crossing closed, What happened and When will the bridge be opened in detail

Why is M25 Dartford Crossing closed?

Just Stop Oil supporters were two of the individuals who ascended the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge, resulting in its closure, according to the protest group.

At around 03:50 BST, police shut down the bridge that spans the M25 between Essex and Kent in response to reports of climbers.

According to Just Stop Oil, the demonstration was in opposition to further government oil and gas licenses.

The Dartford tunnel has been used as a traffic detour.

Due to the difficulties in securely lowering individuals from height, Essex Police stated that it “may take some time to resolve”.

There are “delays of two hours in both directions, with eight miles of congestion counter-clockwise and seven miles of congestion counter-clockwise,” according to a tweet from National Highways East.

For safety reasons, the A282 at the QE2 Bridge was shut down.

The M25 London Orbital Motorway connects the A282 (1.7-mile, 2.8-kilometer) bridge, which carries traffic southward from Essex to Kent. Northbound traffic travels through the Dartford Tunnel.

According to Just Stop Oil, the two supporters scaled the two 84-meter poles at the bridge’s northern end in “an act of protest against a criminal administration.” According to the group, one of the two, Morgan Trowland, was a 39-year-old London-based bridge design engineer.

In order to speed up oil production, our government has passed suicidal laws that kill people and harm the environment, according to Mr. Trowland. “I’m taking direct action because I can’t confront this absurdity at my desk job building bridges.”

Essex Police said the two people were “currently at height”

The Dartford Tunnel, which normally exclusively carries traffic traveling north on the M25, was being used to redirect southbound traffic.

According to National Highways, both northbound and southbound traffic was delayed by two hours.

Gareth Johnson, the Dartford-based Conservative MP, argued that it was “wrong” for the protestors to “impose their ideas” on commuters and students.

“This action, which is once again inflicting traffic agony to residents in and around Dartford, I utterly abhor,” he stated.

It is simply another illustration of the absolute selfishness of these demonstrators.

Chief Constable Ben-Julian Harrington of the Essex Police said:

“It is a very hazardous and challenging situation. “I believe they are insane. I’m very angry right now.” According to BBC Essex, Rob Hollyman, director of Youngs Transport Ltd. in Purfleet on the north bank of the river: “It’s awful beyond belief. We are spending tens of thousands of pounds as a result.

“Instead of working and managing the business, I’m stuck in traffic.” The group said that over 450 of its supporters had been detained during the previous two weeks of protest. After some activists taped themselves to the road in east London’s Shoreditch High Street on Sunday, more than 20 people were detained.

Last year, the High Court imposed a temporary injunction to prevent environmental campaigners from holding protests on the M25.

Suella Braverman, the home secretary for the Conservative Party, called the protesters’ acts “self-defeating” and “absolutely reprehensible.”

Just Stop Oil

You’ve probably already seen the tomato soup can protesters from Just Stop Oil throw at van Gogh’s sunflowers. Over the past two days, environmental activists have dominated the news and undoubtedly polarised opinion. While some understand that protests are meant to be disruptive, others have found it difficult to link their behavior to the cause. What are they fighting for, and who exactly is Just Stop Oil?

Just Stop Oil: Who Are They?

A coalition of organizations known as Just Stop Oil, according to their official website, is pushing the government to stop issuing any new licenses for the exploration, development, and production of fossil fuels in the UK.

The group, which came together in April, has been causing havoc for more than a fortnight.

Which protests have Just Stop Oil participated in?

However, the group has also been gluing themselves to paintings to promote their message. The soup is poured at the van Gogh picture was undoubtedly their most notable moment.

To force the closure of the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge at the Dartford Crossing between Essex and Kent, two Just Stop Oil activists scaled the structure as of 5 a.m. this morning (October 17).

In recent weeks, they have also used glue to block Shoreditch High Street in London, as well as Park Lane and streets in Westminster.

What are the goals of Just Stop Oil?

The demands of the demonstrators include an end to all fossil fuel use. They are striving to increase government investment in renewable energy sources and to improve the insulation of our buildings (so they waste less energy). They also advocate for reevaluating travel habits and reducing the use of private vehicles and airplanes.

Why are the activists being detained?

More than 1,700 arrests have been made against Just Stop Oil demonstrators since the organization’s founding in April, and five of its members are currently behind bars. The arrests were made for a variety of reasons.

Following the Shoreditch protest and the Westminster marches, the Met Police said that 26 and 54 people, respectively, were detained for intentional blockage of a highway. Two protesters have been charged with criminal damage after throwing soup at a van Gogh painting. There may be more. There will be Just Stop Oil protests throughout the month.
