English musician John Waddington is best known as the guitarist for the English electronic rock band The Pop Group.
When John Waddington formed his first band at the age of seventeen, he was the lead singer, guitarist, and primary songwriter for the punk band The Boyfriends.
He joined The Pop Group in 1977 as one of their guitarists after the band’s brief existence. He contributed to their two critically acclaimed albums, Y and For How Much Longer Do We Tolerate Mass Murder?.
The Pop Group is an English rock group that was founded in 1977 in Bristol by Mark Stewart on vocals, John Waddington on guitar, Simon Underwood on bass, Gareth Sager on guitar and saxophone, and Bruce Smith on drums. Their work in the late 1970s combined radical politics with a variety of musical influences, including punk, dub, funk, and free jazz, and it helped to establish post-punk music.
The band separated in 1981 after releasing two albums, Y (1979) and For How Much Longer Do We Tolerate Mass Murder? (1980), as well as hits like “She Is Beyond Good and Evil” and “We Are All Prostitutes” (1979). Later projects that its members worked on included New Age Steppers and Rip Rig + Panic. The band reformed in 2010 and began travelling and putting out new music.
He received an invitation to join Maximum Joy, another post-punk band after The Pop Group broke up in 1981. Along with Disc O’Dell, he was a member of the short-lived German electro band U-BahnX. The band was one of the “few bands on the [post-punk] scene at the time to whom we related,” according to David J of Bauhaus. On Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, the American singer St. Vincent covered the song “She Is Beyond Good And Evil.”
The song was a regular fixture on her Strange Mercy Tour as well. Outside of music, The Simpsons creator Matt Groening is a fan of the band and invited them to reunite for All Tomorrow’s Parties in 2010. This led to the band’s comeback.
