Lamont Dozier’s Early Life
Dozier was a part of the songwriting and production group Holland-Dozier-Holland, which helped create most of the Motown sound and a number of top hits for performers including Martha and the Vandellas, The Supremes, The Four Tops, and The Isley Brothers. Eddie Holland focused mostly on songwriting and vocal production, while Dozier worked as the group’s musical arranger and producer alongside Brian Holland.
Before the group began collaborating as a writing and production partnership for Motown in 1962, Dozier released a few failed singles on various Detroit labels.
Lamont Dozier as a Composer
In the 1980s, Dozier co-wrote the song “Two Hearts” with Phil Collins for the soundtrack to the film Buster, which went on to become another number one hit.
“Two Hearts” was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song, won the Grammy Award for Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or Television, and shared the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song with Carly Simon’s “Let the River Run” from Working Girl.
In addition, “Loco in Acapulco,” which is included on the Buster Soundtrack, was co-written by Collins and Dozier for The Four Tops.
Lamont Dozier wrote “Without You,” a duet by R&B artists Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle, for the soundtrack of another movie in 1987. The song served as the love theme for the comedy film Leonard Part 6, which was released the same year.
Additionally, “Without You” was adapted twice, with the first version appearing in Portuguese and the second in Spanish, in 1989 and 1990, respectively.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted Dozier and the Holland brothers in 1990.
He contributed to the music for the First Wives Club stage production in 2009. As an Artist-in-Residence Professor on the faculty of the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music in 2008, he also instructed credit courses in popular music.
